Page 10 of No Rest For Wicked

“Get him off! Get him off! He’s going to rip my pants!”

“Say please!” I sing-song at him as Ezra joins me, my hand immediately snaking itself around his arm.

“Please, Wicked! Jesus!” Nic’s aura is hilariously filled with worry at the state of his expensive suit pants. He never wears anything else. That’s his fault.

“Oh, fine! Crybaby!” I whistle at my babies and they instantly stop what they’re doing and race over to me with squeaks of excitement. I let go of Ezra’s arm long enough to bend down and give their furry little bodies some well-deserved scratches before returning to my favorite spot. “Did you boys have fun picking on daddy?”

“¡Por el amor de dios! They ripped them! These were expensive!” Nic exclaims as he surveys the damage done, his aura almost saddened by the state. I almost feel bad. Almost.

“Oh calm down, daddy. I’ll buy you some new ones.”

“Would you please stop calling me that! It’s fucking weird!”

“It’s not weird. It’s hot! Can you imagine?” I grip Ezra’s arm tightly as I raise my voice in a dramatic moan. “Oh, yes! Fuck me, daddy! Fuck me, daddy!”

Kai and I both start cackling as Nic stomps off and we follow him, randomly moaning out dirty bedroom talk as we make our way into the library. Ezra maintains his ever vigilant stand at my side, dutifully leading me effortlessly through the doors. Once we step through into the quiet atmosphere of the keepers of knowledge and other worlds, we do manage to stop our shenanigans, leaving Nic to practically faint from relief.

“Okay, so where do we start?” Kai’s aura is definitely less weighed down by the remnants of last night’s indulgence as he prepares himself to get down to business.

“Can you go ask the librarian where the public records are for the city while Ezra and I find a nice quiet spot for us to look through them?” Squeaks rise up from by my feet and I add, “And Gizmo and Snitch. They’ll help too.”

“On it! I’ll get everything I can!” Kai races off, followed by a grumbling Nic, and I turn my face up towards Ezra.

“Ready, big guy?” He grunts in response and I grin before he leads me wherever he thinks is best. It takes a minute, but I eventually hear a door open and he leads me through before gently guiding me to a chair and closing the door behind us.

“Private study room. You’ll be safe here.” He says simply before I feel him take the seat next to me.

“Thanks, Brick!” I practically beam at him as I shuffle my chair closer to his and lay my head back down on his shoulder while Gizmo and Snitch find some kind of chasing game to play around us, their chirps and playful growls keeping the area from being too quiet.

It’s moments like these that I recognize the erosion of the walls inside of me, ones that I’ve maintained for far too long. The way the guys are with me, our shenanigans, and the pure…contentedness that it all brings is making quick work of whatever defenses I have left. It scares me. It feels like I’m vulnerable. Like my death has been written in the stars and my descent to it has been propelled forward the moment they stepped through my front door.

It’s become difficult to see past what my life is now and picture what it will be once they’re gone. They’ve somehow come into my world and convinced a part of my brain that they’ve been there all along. Like they belong there.

Shoving my worries away, I angle my face up towards Ezra’s and squeeze his arm. “What are you thinking?”

He doesn’t need any further explanation, he simply disengages my hold on him and wraps me up in his arms. I take the cue and slide into his lap with a sigh of contentment, my small form easily fitting into his hold as if it were made for me. Pressing my head to his chest, I focus on his steady heartbeat as he settles further into his chair, waiting for my answer.

Lup-dup.

Lup-dup.

The rhythmic, calm beat picks up in strength and speed as the aura beneath me starts to shift and sway. His hold on me tightens as he opens up, allowing his vault of suppressed emotions and thoughts out to play.

Thoughts of me in my little black dress from last night flash through the constant darkness of my mind. My smile. My laughter. The look on my face as I danced with Kai. A flurry of joy and light accompany his memories as he continues through the night.

Next, it’s me falling on my ass in the entryway on a pile of skittles before yelling for Gizmo and Snitch. Him lifting me worriedly in his arms and rushing me into my bedroom to check me out. Lifting my dress, he sees the pale skin of my ass turning bright red before he leans in to kiss away the pain, then devour my mouth wholeheartedly. Lust, warmth, a flipping, beating bright emotion flaring through him.

He skips over the rest, fast-forwarding to waking up and seeing my sleeping form beside him, my features relaxed and peaceful as he strokes the edges of the scars around my eyes, nothing but pure…something, shining through him.

The warm glow is still present when I wake up and smile as he greets me. It stays even when my naked form moves to throw on a pair of grungy sweatpants and a worn t-shirt before tucking my hair up in a messy bun. He promises me breakfast will be done as he stops me from leaving the room, pressing a gentle kiss to my lips before directing me to the bathroom. Him wanting me to take care of myself first.

His thoughts stay on me and all that I am to him as he cooks. His admiration of my independent, headstrong personality. His intent to show me that he never wants me to change–he likes me exactly the way I am–he just wants me to know that I’m not alone anymore. That he’s not going anywhere.

He loves me.

The flood of images, thoughts, and feelings stop and I come to, realizing my face is wet with tears. I try to stop them immediately, but it’s like my control over myself is zapped away. My chest aches as I press my forehead to his to try and gather my bearings, though it’s only made more difficult when he just squeezes me tighter, letting me be an absolute mess all over him.

Ezra loves me.
