“It was like a vision, but not. I justknewif I didn’t do what I did, you’d be dead. I just saw it. I don’t know how, but I knew it was true.”

“You saw the future?”

“I-I guess. I don’t know. Maybe it was just intuition.” She tries to shrug her shoulders, and lets out a cry of pain before settling further into my arms.

“Please don’t ever do that again. Please!” I hold her tighter, willing her to hear the desperation in my voice. I don’t intend to hide it from her. Not anymore.

“I can’t do that, Nic.” Her words cause a spark of irritation to flare up inside me, lighting me up like it’s been dormant for years and is about to make an epic return. “Hey now. Don’t get angry with me. You don’t get it.”

“Don’t get what?”

“You guys just left me there! Locked away like a child while you went racing into danger without a second thought!” Her words are razor sharp, cutting deep, and I jerk back from her ire.

“Iz-”

“Don’t Izabella me! I thought you were going to die! You selfish, arrogant, egotistical, unbearable assho-”

I shut her up with a kiss.

It isn’t rough, or dominating. It’s a kiss of the purest form. One used just to convey what she means to me and everything that I am prepared to be for her.

Then it’s over.

“I love you. For everything you are and ever will be.” My tone is breathless, my heart jumping to my throat. “I will forever be yourguerrero–yourwarrior.”

“I-” Hands grab my shoulders as she opens her mouth to speak and I pull my gun with my free hand, my finger pressing the trigger without thought. My hold is knocked to the side as the shot rings out.

“Jesus, Nic! It’s me! You have to move!” Kai’s voice pierces through the bubble of awareness we’ve been wrapped up in and I see his face illuminated by red and blue flashes of light. “Do you understand? They need to see her!”

I take in the crowd of onlookers being held back by police, the EMTs waiting just behind Kai, and notice that Ezra’s nowhere to be seen.

“Nic.” I glance back down at Wicked, and though she’s doing her best to hide it, I see the grimace of pain in her features. “I’ll be okay. Let them take me.”

I nod, dropping my gun to the ground, the EMTs immediately swooping in as Kai pulls me away. “Where’s Ezra?”

“Well…” Kai hesitates and I shoot him a glare. “He kind of went a bit crazy when he thought Wicked was dead. He’s being seen right now.” He jerks his head towards an ambulance and that’s when I finally notice my surroundings in detail.

Windows and walls are shattered and broken. Trash cans and street lights are littering the ground in pieces. Even the damn stop sign on the corner is bent in half, sticking out of the side of a building.

“Holy fuck.”

“Exactly my thoughts too.” Kai is nodding as I glance back at him, yet when he meets my eyes, he quickly turns his focus to the ground. “He got away.”

My heart plummets and I let out a curse before sighing. “Later. When Wicked can hear.”

“You got it, boss.”

I take another long look at the destruction of the street and turn back tomi vida, my lips twitching into a smile when I see her giving the poor EMTs a run for their money.

As long as she’s alive and breathing, then that’s all that matters.
