"I know you're not blind, you had to have noticed." He watched me. I could feel his eyes on me, even if I wasn't looking at him. "You're a great guy, and I'm glad you ignored it, but now I'm telling you to woo the fuck out of my sister."

"You don't mean it, you're still high on your sexcapades from last night," I replied, picking out the heaviest weights. I needed something else to focus on.

"Whatever," he said with a shrug before he picked the weights back up and started his next rep. We were silent for the rest of the workout while a part of me wanted to search out his sister and do what he said. She would laugh in my face. I was sure Ty was wrong about her being in love with me for years, I would have noticed.

I was doing it again.

My gaze ran over her text for the third time. I was a coward. It was harmless, one of our normal check-ins we did with each other. She was in the same place she always was at this time of day, I didn’t even have to look at her shared location.

Sammy

Hey, they have potato wedges @ lunch today. Bet u wish u were here. *winky face*

My finger hovered over the keyboard to type out my reply. I started and erased it again. Ty's words were still echoing in my head, burying themselves deep. Had she been in love with me for years?

I snapped a quick picture of my big mac, then typed out a response.

I've got something even better here. The grass isn't always greener.

I attached the picture and hit send. That was innocent enough, right?

Her response came right away.

Oh, a big mac 4 a big boy. Did Ty work u in 2 the ground again?

I smiled stupidly down at my phone. Typing,

Doesn't he always?

The response bubbles kept my eyes glued to my phone. I didn't have to wait long before she sent,

Yeah, he is insane... We need 2 talk later. Do u have time?

Reading those words shouldn't make my heart beat harder trying to escape my body via my ribcage, but it did.

Keeping it simple, I replied,

yeah, normal place after class?

Thankfully, Ty wasn't here to see my response to our simple texts. Was it normal to have a meeting place for my best friend's little sister? Or to know her schedule by heart? Probably not. All of it was my dragon. He was obsessive, and I was sure it was going to get worse now that nothing was holding him back. Anxiety and excitement warred inside of me as the time passed. I had no clue what she needed to talk to me about, but that she was coming to me about it and not her family made me feel good.

I had arrived before her and grabbed an open swing. I slowly kicked at the ground as I waited for her to arrive, the swing swung in little sweeps. Some teens were having fun running all over the wooden play structure, playing tag around the smaller kids. It reminded me of younger years after I escaped Tartus and hid here. A kind family took me in as a foster, knowing nothing about my past. The politics back home would have had me murdered in my sleep. They probably all assumed I had died.

My actual parents never came looking for me, but then the portal had been something I hadn't expected when I ran. I followed a Goddess through before it closed, and I never looked back. In some ways I understood the demon prince's feelings. The need to escape your future was familiar to me. Not that it would stop me from helping Samantha any way I could.

"Hey!" Samantha called out to me like I conjured her with my thoughts.

"Sammy," I said with an answering smile on my face.

Then it felt like something reached inside my mouth and ripped out my tongue, and my nerves held me hostage. It was as if I morphed into an unsure school boy as she approached and took her usual swing. She kicked her feet off the ground andpumped her legs as she sent herself soaring as if she wished she could fly. All I could do was watch her, caught under her spell.

"This never gets old," she said as she urged herself higher.

"What did you need to talk about?"

She sighed and stuck her feet out to slow herself down. "Right."

I tracked her movement until she came to a full stop next to me. She leaned back against the chain. "So?"
