"I think that the demons are working together."

"Whoa, slow down.” I kicked off the swing and kept my gaze on her. “They don't work together, they aren’t really team players. Why do you think that?" I asked. Demons were selfish creatures and do not work together. They barely got along enough to create more demons. Their procreating was a little different though because they needed souls, but if they were here and working together, they could gather as many as they need.

"Lex told me," she said and turned to watch the teens hold on to the bit of their childhood they had left.

"Last night? Why did you wait so long to tell me? I never would have left you alone," I chided her, and she rolled her eyes.

"Sorry to disappoint you, Dad, but he told me this morning, after I stayed the night," she replied.

My breath hitched in my chest, as it felt like she had hit me in the stomach. I tried to take normal breaths as I absorbed her words.

"You don't stay the night," I said. It came out with a little more accusation than I meant it to. It wasn't like she was cheating on me.

She looked sharply at me before her brow furrowed. "I fell asleep. Besides, I was working," she laughed.

"Working?" Again, my tone wasn't how I meant the word to come out, and I cringed as she crinkled her nose at me.

"Why are you being weird?"

"I'm not the one that says no strings and then stays all night. Are you sure Lex isn't interested in more?" I growled. Fuck. No. That wasn't what I meant to say. I knew that Lex wanted more, I could tell, one unrequited love to another, the signs were hard to hide.

"You sound jealous," she scoffed, crossing her arms as she faced me again.

"Yeah, not jealous. Concerned. Aren't you a little too old to be sleeping around?" What the fuck was wrong with my filter? Shit. Her glare hit me hard, of course I didn't care. I mean I cared, but I wasn't one of those guys that think a girl should close her legs but a guy can sleep with as many girls as he wants.

"Excuse me?" she exploded as she shot to her feet. "Where do you get off? You aren't actually my dad or my brother. I thought we were friends. And if you are going to be my friend, you need to get used to the idea that I will sleep with whoever I want, when I want. I don't do relationships, I'm never going to do that to someone else. Not when dying is an actual possibility every single night."

"Sammy—"

"No, stop calling me that. I'm not some little girl. I'm a grown ass woman," she said, her anger painted across her face.

"Sam—" I tried again.

"You know what? Fuck you, Raiden, I'll get Lex's help. At least he doesn't judge me and my choices," she said. She surged across the park, and I was hot on her heels.

Reaching for her, I tugged her around to face me. Her angry breaths slapped against me as I held her way too close. "Let me talk, Sammy," I rasped. "Don't leave mad."

Her gaze narrowed on me, and she clenched her jaw tight. Her lips were a thin line of fury on her face. I was probably lucky she didn't have her dagger on her right now. I ran mythumb over the tiny tattoo of the bow and arrow she had on her forearm.

"I won't let you die. As long as you have me, you're safe," I said. Now was the time to tell her the truth. I had rehearsed it a million times, telling her I was a dragon and similar enough to the demons that she hunted that in a different life I could have been her target was terrifying.

"Rai—" she said as she softened beneath my touch. "I know you mean well—"

"I have the capabilities to protect you. Sammy, there is something you should know—" My sentence was cut off as commotion broke out near the tree line. Three demons ran from the forest as if their lives depended on it. Samantha tugged away from me as she raced over to stop them from getting near the play structure full of kids.

Then Alastor strolled out of the shadows after them, his beast snarling and snapping after them.

CHAPTER 11

Samantha

Panic spreadthrough me as I realized I didn't have my dagger. I'd taken a demon out with my bare hands before, but three of them at once might be tricky. I was halfway across the grass that separated us when Alastor the God from last night stepped out of the darkness of the woods. My steps faltered as his dog took out one demon. The three heads tore its limbs from its body in a gruesome display of destruction.

I was transfixed as the beast easily launched himself off the ground and twenty feet through the air at the other two. Knocking them both to the ground. After taking them out with ease, the dog shook out its fur and trotted back to the God. He rewarded the animal with a pat on each of its heads before his gaze caught on me. He straightened almost instantly and used the handkerchief in his pocket to wipe his hands clean. Then his long legs closed the distance between us.

"My lady," he said as they got closer. "What an unexpected pleasure meeting you here."

He had a way of speaking that was a mixture of old school and new. He wore class like he had created it.
