"Just an observation," he replied.

"Can we get back to the demons and the portal?" I asked. I couldn't handle the emotional stuff. If what he said was true, then I messed everything up. Relationships were a hard pass for me, I couldn't be in one with a daily possibility of dying or putting the ones I loved in danger.

"Ah, the easy stuff?" he asked, reading me like he had known me forever. "Your hesitance in relationships might be misplaced."

"Demons? Portal?"

He chuckled, a sound that sent a shiver down my spine; it was a nice warm sound. "Right."

CHAPTER 14

Alastor

My hands grippedbehind my back. I faced her like I would face a firing squad. I had put it off for as long as I could.

"There is only one way to stop them," I said. If only Lexington had agreed to help me, I didn't want to put Samantha in danger. Not when I wasn't sure how many demons were there. What if Cerberus couldn't handle all of them? What if a high level one was already through the portal?

She crossed her arms and raised her brow in question. "How?"

I pulled in a breath. "If they believe I'm on their side and I bring you to them. They will take us back to the camp, where the portal is."

Cerberus shifted on the ground, sensing my internal agitation. I didn't want to do this. Every fiber of my being wanted to protect her, and taking her directly into the path of danger wasn't it.

"Okay, let's do it." She didn't even hesitate as she offered herself up as bait. Her dragon wouldn't like this plan. Lex would regret his terms; hell, I regretted not taking his terms. Wasn't itbetter for Samantha to live and breathe than to lose her before she loved me?

"It is too late tonight," I replied, glancing at her window that was already showing signs of the sun peeking over the horizon. The smoke from the fire that caught in the forest was still being carried into the air, but I could tell from this distance that they had gotten it under control.

"I will meet you tomorrow at the club then," she said. "Afterwards you can help me capture Bellamy."

"We have an agreement then," I replied. Moving toward the door, I gestured for Cer to follow. He popped up, trotted over to Samantha, and licked her hand before following me to the exit. Lex might not like it, but maybe it will help him to see my way, and it is always fun pressing his buttons.

With a simple goodbye, I closed the door behind us. The halls were empty as we left the building. A slight fog clung to the ground, getting denser as the sun rose. Soon I wouldn't be able to see a foot in front of me. I was almost back at my hotel when Bellamy stepped from the fog. Maybe he would make this easy for me, knowing him though, I doubted it.

Cerberus let out a low growl from all three heads as he approached.

"Missed you too, mutt." Bellamy smirked.

"Ready to return home?" I asked.

"Not quite. I told you, tell my father that he has enough souls now, and he can create a new child he can teach to rule. I'm never going back. I’ve found a new distraction here that I much prefer to Tartus."

"Well then, it looks like we are at a standstill because I'm not returning without you," I replied.

"What if I'm dead, will you go home then? Or do you plan on sticking around for the hunter? Maybe kidnap her?" He fired the questions at me faster than I could process them. I didn’t thinkhe actually wanted to die, maybe at first, but I’ve been witness to him with Samantha. I’ve seen the way he watches her.

I shook my head and continued walking, he wouldn't get an answer for any of them.

"Maybe you aren't as boring as I remembered," Bellamy said.

Ignoring him, I pulled open the door to the building. He followed, hot on my heels. When an older couple gasped, he glanced their way and gave them a toothy grin.

"Cosplay, he is still in character," I explained for him before they went screaming from the room or fainting from fright.

He laughed as he stepped into the elevator behind me. "Penthouse?"

Glowering, I inserted the special key they gave me when I checked in. Maybe this was the way to get him to agree to go back to Tartus and take his place as future ruler.

"Do you have a place to stay?"
