Coldness shivered through me when he dropped his hands and leaned back without question. I wanted to climb into his lap and curl into a ball, if only to share his warmth.

"Has the Demon Prince been in?"

"Bellamy?" His brow went up into his hair. "No, he hasn't been around."

He didn't have to ask me why. The question was on his face. I swallowed. I didn't really have a true reason for asking about the demon. Honestly, I could hide the question behind my mission of capturing him, but it wasn't about that now. Everything in me told me that he had nothing to do with the chaos that he was being accused of.

I'd never made it a habit of hunting the demons like that bartender that relieved Lex, he was only making a living and not harming anyone. He didn't have the normal pale skin of the vamps that drained humans. Something about the never-endingthirst that caused always made them easy to spot. Sunken eyes, white skin, and clawed fingers. They looked more like Nosferatu than the vampires that didn't drain the life from people.

"Sam, are you doing okay?" The concern in his voice had tears trying to prick at the back of my eyeballs. Damn.

"Never better." I ran my hand over the cool metal of the stripper pole as I leaned back against it. "We don't do the emotional shit, Lex. What is with the question?"

"I consider you a friend. Is it not okay to worry about my friends? You showed up in my bar looking bruised and battered. Now you're asking about Bellamy, and it doesn't sound like you want to murder him anymore."

A large breath of air filled my lungs as I tried to figure out a response. I didn't have one. So I did the only other thing I could think of. I turned on the flirt. Spinning on the bar, I looked up at the lights on the ceiling and arched my back so my stomach pressed into it.

"Have you ever thought of having classes in the club? Lots of girls would love the chance to learn how to use the bar. I'd be first in line." I winked over at him.

A slow smile spread across his face as he let me escape his question. "In that case—" he trailed off as I hooked my leg around it and hung my arms back, my fingers curled around his thigh. My hair pooled in his lap. He leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine.

A perfect upside-down kiss that reminded me of the kiss fromSpiderman, only with no superheroes or love. I thought. It was all becoming muddled together for me with him. You couldn't actually be in love with more than one person, right? That wasn't a thing. Well, it probably was a thing, but it wasn't for me. The kiss ended the way it began, slowly. By the time he pulled his mouth from mine, I was lightheaded from hanging backward, and my leg ached slightly from holding my weight inplace. I took the moment I wasn't facing him to collect myself. Because turning around with my emotions written all over my face would be a mistake.

"Oh crap," I said, smacking my forehead and still too cowardly to look at him, "I forgot I have to meet Ty."

Right. Now we could add lying to the mix. Sure, that was a good idea. I mean, it was as if I wanted to shake him like all the others, but something inside made me want to keep him.

Even if it was only for a few more moments.

CHAPTER 23

Lex

Samantha ranfrom the room like her ass was on fire. That was what I got for giving in to my feelings for a moment and showing her with my kiss how much I cared. If I could gather her in my arms and hold her forever, I would. But she would never step foot in Fantasia again if she knew that. So friendship it was, if she allowed that even.

As I slumped back into the couch, I pulled out my phone. Alastor had insisted I take his number after we finished our adventure in the woods. He should know about what they did to her. They were getting bolder.

I shot a quick text to him.

We need to talk.

His response was immediate, did he already have his phone in his hand?

Hello to you too.

I didn't have time for his bullshit. So I quickly replied.

Demons are getting braver.

What do you mean?

Just get your ass to the club.

I thought I wasn't welcome.

Rolling my eyes, I took a deep breath. Of course, he would bring that up at a time like this.

You're not. This is only for Sam.
