He grasped his hands behind his back and pivoted back to his throne. "Nothing of importance."

"She kills demons for a living father. Why are you not against this?"

"But does she kill them because she is told that she is supposed to, or does she kill them because she wants to? She would be a powerful ally for the Underworld. Someone that could eliminate unruly demons. There will be plenty after gifting them with the souls to make more." He spun back toward me on his heel. "Make it happen, son."

I blinked slowly. He never did what I expected him to do. His motives were always far-sighted, like the gift of the souls that the reaper stole for Hecate. Instead of keeping them when they arrived one after another, he gave them to the King of Demons. I still hadn't learned the purpose of that, and there had to be one.

"Why give them a means to procreate if you want to have a tool to use against them?"

He tilted his head to the side and watched me. "Someday, you will learn that it is about the relationships you build with potential enemies. It makes sense to keep the horde happy. We share a space with them. No matter how powerful we are, if all of them stormed our walls at once, we would fall. That is why I gave them souls, a way to keep them satisfied, because everyone wants someone to love. It makes the universe grow. Without love, we are nothing."

My father, King of the Underworld, destroyer of worlds, the biggest sap of them all. I shook my head. I wasn't sure I would ever fully understand the man standing in front of me. One moment he demands that I break off my friendship with Bellamy, and he sent me on a mission that destroyed my friendship with Lex, but he wanted me to pursue Samantha. It made little sense, but he rarely did until I looked back on things. Hindsight truly was twenty-twenty.

"Don't be afraid of kidnapping the girl," he said. His words echoed in my head long after I left him.

CHAPTER 34

Samantha

My soft footfallswere the only sound in the area. Puffs of frosty breath fell from my lips as I wandered the streets like some hoodlum. My hoodie fell down below my dagger, strapped to my pants. I had skipped the leather tonight. Hunting was the last thing I wanted to do for once. Raiden wanted to come with me, but he would have distracted me after the day we had spent together. A part of me was wary of being out alone after being caught by those demons a little over a week ago.

Hunting was my job. Just because I had one bad day didn't mean I could just quit. There wasn't anyone that could take my place. Not even my cousins were as good as me. I was the Buffy of the Demon Hunter world. If I was honest, it was exhausting. Juggling college, which thankfully I was still passing this year at least, and hunting had been hard enough. Men now added into the equation were going to make it worse.

It turned out I didn't need Raiden with me to be distracted, because when Bellamy stepped out of the alleyway in front of me, I crashed into him. His arms were the only thing that kept me upright.

"Whoa," he said with a small smile as he steadied us both. He focused on my face before he realized who he had in his arms. I watched the transformation in his face. It went from a little flirty to anger and something else. His hands fell off of me as if I had burned him, and he stepped away. "You should watch where you're going, Hunter."

"I could say the same about you. What are you doing slinking in the shadows?" I glanced at the alley he had appeared from and back at him, crossing my arms.

He huffed out a small laugh, shoving his hands into his jeans. "It's what demons do, creep around. Right?"

"Stop deflecting. I thought you were going to help close that portal," I said.

"Did I say that?"

Did he think he was going to get out of this? Annoyance sparked in my blood, and I narrowed my eyes at him. "You did."

He studied his clawed-tipped nails. "I don't recall."

A surprised grunt pushed from his lips as I slammed him into the brick wall. He was only playing games now.

"Careful," he said, his eyes flaring bright in the darkness, "you might turn me on with your foreplay."

"I told you that can't happen again," I hissed. Although, pressed against his body as I held him immobile, I couldn't help the flare of lust that traveled through me, lighting all of my senses up. "You are going to help me close the portal and stop the demons from coming here."

"Oh, yeah, talk dirty to me," he let out an exaggerated moan.

"Stop it," I rasped.

"You act as if I can stop my response to having your body molded to mine and your honeyed scent filling my senses," he said as he inhaled deeply. "I'm an incubus, love. I feed off of the lust you are radiating, and yours is intoxicating."

Awareness of all the places we touched warmed my blood as it pumped through my body, but I pushed it back. I couldn't keep falling into his arms and having sex with him every time I was around him.

"Gods, what do you do to me?" he muttered the words, and I wasn't positive he meant to say them out loud. "If you do not want to end the night with me buried deep in your sweet folds, release me. I cannot control myself much longer, and that would remove the choice for both of us."

Involuntarily, I licked my lips and pressed against him. My leg attempted to wrap around him. It felt like someone else was controlling my body. A real groan tumbled from his mouth as I tried to get even closer, rubbing myself along his obvious length. His tail wrapped around my leg and inched up to the place I needed the friction.

"Hunter," he moaned. Besides his tail, he didn't make any motion to touch me. In fact, it was almost as if he was attempting to make himself one with the wall at his back. "Please."
