“Patrick and I were waiting on your call, since this is your fight. What do you want us to do?”

I scrub a hand over my face. “Now this is allmyfight? I thought we gave up that individuality bullshit the minute we all three dropped into our mother’s womb.”

“I thought you might want to call the shots considering it’s Serenity.”

“What the hell does that have to do with anything?” I realize I’m shouting at Linc, but I can’t control my frustration. I’ve been holed up in this goddamn cabin for days believing that my brothers are handling my business, when in reality they’ve been sitting on their thumbs waiting for me to call the shots.

Well, I’m calling them now.

“Hunt down her brother and shut that little prick up. I don’t care if you have to rip out all his teeth, just make him stop stirring shit up.”

“Right. Making a note of it now—full…smile…revision.” He pauses between words as if he’s actually writing them down.

I pinch the bridge of my nose, fighting for calm I couldn’t feel further from. I hate how impotent I am here, away from my brothers and the world I know. My pacing takes me to the wall and I swing around, striding back across the room.

“Then track down Sergei. Make sure you’ve got enough backup because I don’t trust that bastard not to jump you.”

“Dude, I’m acquainted with Sergei. I’m not gonna do something stupid.”

“See what he wants with Serenity.”

“You want me to pretend that we’re looking for her too?”

“Yeah, that’s good. Throw him off the scent.”

There’s a beat of silence, and my muscles tighten as I wait for the other concrete block to drop.

“What the hell else aren’t you telling me, Linc?” I shout.

“The shipment we’re expecting from Canada? It was confiscated at the border.”

A haze of red passes over my vision. I glare at my surroundings but my mind’s not here. I’m rifling through reasons why now, of all times, our shipment of pharmaceuticals was confiscated when it’s made it over the border without a hitch every single time.

“Goddamn! I can’t even go away for a week without you all letting it go to shit!” I feel my blood pressure rising and my temples start to pound.

“It’s gotta be Sergei’s doing. He’s getting revenge on us because he knows you’ve got Serenity,” Linc responds.

“That Russian son of a whore isn’t stopping us.” Those drugs sell on the black market. Sure, many are misused and abused, but they do some good too. Cancer patients receive medications they can’t afford, children receive treatments for diseases.

My mind clears as I see a clear solution. “Get some guys together and raid the Stepanov’s warehouse. Get what drugs they have. We’ll deal with any fallout later.”

“We’ll hit the warehouse today.”

“Good.”

“When can we expect you back in Detroit?”

Linc’s question is one I’ve been asking myself for days. Since I have no idea what to do with Serenity at this point, I’ve been stalling on making a decision. Which is totally unlike me. I’m a Connolly.

I massage my temples. “Soon. I’m about done here.”

Linc barks out a laugh. “You finally get your teenage crush all to yourself and you’ve used her up already?”

Anger rumbles out of me—a warning to my brother and whoever wants to talk shit on Serenity. “Be careful, Linc. Keep your thoughts to yourself.”

My warning tone has shut him up for once.

“Right. See you when I see you.” Linc ends the call, and I let out an irritated snort.
