They will pay for this. Sergei will find himself crucified by the balls.

His men will die for being stupid enough to follow him.

And I know Serenity’s own brother is involved. If he isn’t already dead, I’ll make sure he is by nightfall.

I only make it a few steps before two men jump in front of me. A low groan from my right is emitting from my brother.

With my triplet’s sixth sense we share I know without looking over that he’s hit.

Serenity

How did my life come to this? All this death and destruction have replaced anything good I might have once had.

Heath’s arms flex around me. I feel the tension and fury humming through his body, just under the surface. He’s about to explode.

In front of us stands Sergei…and Nathan.

Patrick is lying on his side, holding his bullet-mangled leg.

Linc moves up behind Sergei and trains his weapon on the man’s head. And behind Linc, two more of Sergei’s cronies are prepared to take Linc down.

We’re at a standoff. How are any of us going to get out of this alive?

This is all my fault.

No—it’s my brother’s.

Heath lets me slide out of his arms but keeps one anchored around me. I draw my shoulders back and glare straight at my brother.

“How could you, Nathan?” A sob I don’t expect rushes up my throat. I jerk forward with the force of it leaving me. Betrayal is a sharp knife through my heart. “How could you?” I scream at him.

Sergei rolls his eyes. “No pussy is worth this kind of trouble,” he mutters, lifting his gun. He points it directly at my head.

I can almost feel the power radiating out from the barrel. That bullet is still in the chamber, but before I can blink it will be in my skull.

“Nooo!” Heath bellows.

Linc’s face is purple with rage, but he can’t shoot Sergei or he will be killed.

My life narrows to a pinprick. Suddenly, everything is happening in slow motion and as though I have more than five senses telling me I’m about to die.

Sergei’s finger twitches on the trigger.

Just as he pulls it, Nathan dives forward, right into the path of the bullet meant for me.

“Nooo!” I scream as he falls to the floor.

I rush to him, wrapping my arms around his twitching body. I cradle him in my arms as new gunfire erupts throughout the house. But my attention is on Nathan and nobody else. I trust my Connolly men to take care of me in this desperate moment.

My brother’s blood is soaking through my already blood-drenched clothes. Hot and sticky and final.

He is going to die from the bullet he took for me.

Tears gush from my eyes as I stare into his pale face. His gaze is fixed on me, and his mouth moves as if to say something that never comes out because he dies right there in my arms.

Sobs tear through me. I can’t think or move. Pain is the only thing in my body right now. I rock my brother.

He was older than me by three years. He never shielded me from the hell inflicted on me after our father turned on the Connollys.
