Linc shoots me a side-eye.

“Shut the fuck up, man,” I bite off.

“Did I say anything? Christ, you’re edgy for a man who finally got the woman he’s been fantasizing about since his balls dropped.”

A low growl burns up my throat but I cut it off. “Just fucking drive, asshole.”

Linc’s teeth flash white with his wide grin. Back in the day, he always loved fucking with me about Serenity. Especially after he found out I’d never laid a hand on her, not even given her more than a platonic kiss.

Then came the hell of my brothers’ bullying when they learned I was the last virgin in the family.

Leave it up to them to hook me up with multiple girls. And of course, I took what they had on offer. I’ve never been a saint, and Serenity and I had no agreement. We were simply friends.

I’m still mulling this over when Linc pulls up in front of Patrick’s house. I glance over and freeze.

“Jesus Christ!” Linc bites off at the sight of the door busted off its hinges.

We jump out, guns in hand. Gunfire rings in our ears.

“Call for backup!” I holler to Linc. I hit the door without slowing. My only thought is to get to Serenity.

Shouts and screams ricochet through the house. I rake my gaze across the entrance that spills onto the living room. Bodies are scattered on the floor. I don’t give a fuck about who they might be—I can already guess it’s Stepanov’s crew. I search for Serenity’s body, my brother’s too, and see neither.

“Heath, look out!” Patrick’s voice has me taking aim on the man who’s about to shoot me. I squeeze off a shot and take him down before sweeping the room for sign of my brother.

He’s crouched next to the arm of the couch.

A bullet zings past my ear, and I duck. When I do, a soft moan that’s almost a whimper reaches my ears.Serenity.

I dodge the hailstorm of bullets and Linc shoots the shooter in the back. He hits the floor next to me, the life leaving his wide eyes as blood soaks into Linc’s carpet.

Where is Serenity? I have to get to her. She’s somewhere in this room, and there are far too many bullets flying. I can’t believe she hasn’t been hit yet.

Or maybe she is.

My blood runs cold in my veins. I whip my weapon up and take out another of Stepanov’s assholes as he emerges from the kitchen. When he dies, he’s wearing a satisfied sneer that has dread rippling through me that the guy has already gotten to Serenity.

Another volley of bullets rings out as more of Stepanov’s recruits rush in. But our men are right behind them. They know what the fuck they’re doing, and they finish them off in record time.

More shouting makes it impossible for me to get a read on where Serenity is.

“Noooo!” The shrill scream is a stake driven through my heart. I follow the shriek behind the couch and find a six-foot man standing over Serenity. She shrinks against the corner. One man already lies dead at her feet. She’s pale and blood-spattered and about to be executed if I don’t act first.

A roar pushes past my lips. The man spins at the sound, and it gives me a chance to slam a bullet into his brain before he can pull the trigger on Serenity. She snaps her hands to her head, screaming as more blood splashes across her.

The man hits the floor, hemming her in with dead guys.

I make a rush for her and see she’s unarmed. Linc shot the guy before he reached her.

God, I owe my brother so damn much.

I reach into the corner and grab her. She cries out as I pluck her up into my arms and get her away from the bodies.

She’s soaked in blood. The scent is iron and sin and evil. I have no clue if it’s her blood or the men’s or both.

“Linc, cover us!” I yell as I pop out from behind the enormous couch that’s been shielding Serenity.

Gunfire explodes around me as I run with her, darting toward the small bathroom I know is steps away.
