Willie: How so?

Nathan: for starters she is engaged.

Willie: and? She’s not married yet bro. Besides Eve says she’s a week away from her wedding and she’s looking to have fun. All according to Eve.

I waited to reply, Willie’s name showed three dots to send a new message.

Willie: fuck that dude. You and Julia seemed to have something, plus my girl isn’t wrong.

She’s looking to have fun? I supposed I guessed that after how we met last night, but what bride-to-be was ready to throw the towel in a week before she walked down the aisle? Damn, now I was more curious about her.

Nathan: the better question is why is she with a piece of shit guy?

Willie: text her you fool - Eve

They weren’t wrong. I should text her, but what would I say? If she rejected me, which there was a high chance she would, I was not sure I’d be able to handle it. Scrolling through my contacts, I landed on Julia’s phone number and opened a brand-new text screen. Minutes went by as I stared at a blank page, unsure of how to start my message.

Nathan: Julia, it’s Nathan from Rustic Moon. Eve gave me your phone number.

No, that sounded too…odd. Delete, delete, delete.

Nathan: It’s Nathan from last night. Can I see you again?

Fuck, is that too forward? My thumb hovered over the delete button. I swallowed the thick anxious feeling I had down my throat and pressed send.

Julia

Eve drove us back to her house — so that I could pick up my luggage. She was perfectly sober, considering that she had spent most of her time at the bar sucking Willie’s face rather than drinking.

Eve wrapped towels around my body, attempting to spare any future puke particles from finding their way into her new car. I looked like a mummy prepped for burial; fitting, considering how I could now die from embarrassment. Or at least I had hoped.

Since Robbie was here, I’d be staying with my dad instead. Eve truly despised Robbie, not that she kicked us out, but I felt it was for the best.

Shit, Dad. I hadn’t even told him I was here, and now I was going to show up drunk, smelling like puke with my matted hair. Damn Robbie, why the fuck would he show up like this unannounced? If he wanted so badly to be here, I wouldn’t have left New York. The millions of questions buzzed through my mind, but my tongue was useless when I tried to talk.

My nerves were shot upon Robbie’s arrival, and to think moments before that I was gushing all over Nathan and his strong pecks. Those full lips, the way his perfectly stubbled jawline grazed against the softness of my skin. His scent. Oh god. The musk of his warm sweat, the shimmer of its woodsy charm, like fire and roses.

Imagine if Robbie saw us. What if he did see something, could he be playing the fool? Could he be waiting for me to trip up in any way?

The entire ride home with Robbie, my lips tingled as I brushed my fingers up to my mouth. The ride back to my dad’s felt surreal, and it wasn’t the drinks that sloshed in my stomach. What was left of them anyway. When I closed my eyes, the darkness spun along my head as it fell onto Robbie’s shoulder. He muttered something under his breath, but my blurry mind couldn’t make out what he said. All I heard was drunk and how many. But my mind spun into various photographic moments from tonight’s events, and all I could muster up was Nathan.

The way Nathan carried himself, sexy, spontaneous, and he overall had a hot, cocky attitude. Not one that was unbearable, it was the type of cocky that alluded to his potential for hot dirty sex. It was his confident walk.

Then Robbie popped into the picture. Almost as if on cue after Nathan surprised me with his kiss on my lips. I foolishly grinned, wide, but looked away from Robbie, to hide my guilty joy.

I closed my eyes. I needed to get sexy Nathan out of my head as I leaned in slowly to kiss Robbie.

Robbie waved his hand up to block my kiss, as my lips met his palm. “Are you kidding me, Julia? If you want any kiss from me, you’ll need mouthwash immediately.” He said, utterly disgusted.

The music that once blared was turned down almost instantly and Eve looked back at us, as if we were unruly children. “Stop being such an ass, Robbie.” Eve lectured him through gritted teeth. “You ruined our girls’ trip, you know.”

“Whatever, Julia wanted me here, she just didn’t want to tell you.” Robbie snapped back.

Ugh, both Eve and I sighed out loud. I caught some of their bickering, but my throbbing head landed on the shoulder of my seat, and my lids were heavy. I placed my hand over Robbie’s, but he slipped his away quickly, hiding it beneath his leg. The pit of my stomach grew into a bigger knot of hurt.

I suffered anytime I was with him, my eyes filled with tears as I glanced away from his direction. I didn’t want to make a scene, nor be heard, but it hurt too much. I was horrified that this was what I had to look forward to for the rest of my life. What did I do to upset him so much?
