Julia pushed me back, jumping onto my lap as I laid down. She hugged me tightly for minutes.
“Stay with me,” I whispered, “live here with me, and make me the happiest man alive.”
Julia smiled, biting her lip. “I will! But under two conditions.”
I was eating out of the palm of her hand, “Anything, baby.” I kissed her teeth as she smiled.
Julia reached behind the couch and into the box I had before. She pulled out the polaroid, switching it on as she laid by my side. “There’s only one shot left. First, let’s remember this day forever. The first day of the rest of our lives.”
This made me smile, as she tilted the camera above and snapped a picture. The last film sleeve of Emma’s old camera. Finally empty, but leaving me full. Wherever she may be, whatever happened after death, I knew if she could see me now, she would be happy.
“Ok, and your second condition?” I asked, kissing her face wildly all over.
“My second condition is…” She paused for a while, pointing her finger to her cheek. “My second condition is that you wear your firefighter uniform every time we have sex!” She wiggled her eyebrows, teasing me as my chest raced with nerves.
“Then what are we waiting for?” I picked her up, carrying her down the hall as she laughed and screamed.
I couldn’t explain why life had tested me the way it had. It happened for so long, but I couldn’t remember what it was like anymore to be sad. I would think of Julia and all she’s done for me. I was finally happy. I couldn’t believe how fucking good it was to have her in my arms again.
