“Wesogood,” she lied.

I smirked at her and then made my way to the kitchen where Wyatt, Oscar’s husband, was making lunch.

“I’m so sorry about yesterday,” I told him as I made my way to his coffee machine.

He looked at me with fake intensity. In contrast, Oscar was more intense and dominating. Wyatt was lighter and easygoing and a few years younger, but still older than me. I was so lucky to have them. And I thanked Lucas for bringing them into my life. After my sister dropped him off at my apartment, I had been lost, not knowing how to raise a toddler. She threw me into the deep end there. Sammy was a year older than Lucas, so not only did they provide the guidance, but they also gave me emotional support.

“I will overlook it If you tell me all about this cop that was trying to murder my sweet Oscar.”

“What?”

His comment took me off-guard.

“Don’t play dumb, Ori. It’s beneath you.”

I gaped at him. “What exactly did your husband tell you? I have no idea what you're talking about.”

Wyatt raised a brow, then he took pity on me and handed me the pill container.

“My poor husband said he felt like the good detective was seconds away from ripping his arms away from you.”

I choked as I tried to swallow the pills. Luckily, Wyatt took pity on me and started to pat my back.

“What?” I croaked.

Wyatt was not having my shit today, and I was not in the mood to try and guess what exactly vexed him.

“Mr. Love-of-Your-Life was glaring at my husband.”

Clark was glaring at Oscar. I missed that part. I was sure they were just being dramatic.

With ease, I waved a hand in the air. “Growing up, I was like his little sister.”

More like an annoying shadow, but one could say that was exactly what a sibling was, so semantics, right?

“Oh,” Wyatt muttered less than enthusiastically. “Not the epic love story I had made up in my head.”

“Mine either,” I muttered, then cleared my throat. “Thank you again for taking care of Lucas. I really appreciate it.”

Wyatt waved me off. “Anytime. You want some lunch?”

I nodded as I opened Find My Phone on my tablet. You had to love modern technology. I just hoped whoever took my purse had kept my phone on.

“Aha!” I shrieked as I waved it in the air. “I’m going to go pick up my phone in a bit.”

“At the police station?” Wyatt asked.

“Yeah,” I lied before taking a bite of the ham and egg melt he had given me.

I did a quick Google Maps scan, and the residential neighborhood seemed nice. I scrunched my nose because it was on the outskirts of Sunny Pines, but I was sure it would all work out.

After breakfast and a cup of coffee, my headache started to go away. I took hold of Lucas’s hand and walked us back to our apartment.

“Come on, little guy. We have to get ready. We have a special mission to do.”

At my choice of words, Lucas perked up. “Like spwies?”

“Ah, more like an investigative journalist.”
