“Why do you think Dex said no to the gig?” He clapped my back.

Dex had been offered the job before me, and I wasn’t mad about it. I knew he had more qualifications, if I was being honest, but then again, his priorities had changed once he started his own family. With Emma running the diner, if he would have taken the gig, they would never have had much time for themselves.

It was an opportunity I had never thought I would get, and I was grateful for it.

“Heard about what happened at Heavenly. Although I’m not sure what to believe.”

I walked up to the counter with my brother, almost afraid to ask what was going around in town. “What did you hear?”

“That my favorite brother-in-law got beaten up by a prostitute.” Freya, my once arch-nemesis and the only sister-in-law to Prescott, butted in with a little too much glee in her tone.

“I heard there was a riot, and people were fighting over Prescott,” my brother added.

I snickered. Prescott was not going to have a good morning.

Freya beamed at us from across the counter. “I love it when the gossip is about other people because I get to join in the fun.”

I smirked at her. There was a thick file on her back at the station from her younger years.

“First thing I’m going to do when I become chief is open up the case on the murder of my baby.”

Freya and her now-husband had crashed into my truck. I had never forgiven her for it.

She sighed. “You’ve got to let it go. Besides, Max paid you for the damages.”

“My baby was never the same after that,” I pointed out.

Freya rolled her eyes, but handed my brother his usual, and then me.

“Add some pastries on you for the emotional damage you caused me.”

My brother was shaking his head. “So, what really happened?”

“Remember Oreo?” I asked him instead.

He chuckled. “Calling her Beth’s little sister doesn’t sound right. I don’t know how many times she told me that one day, she would be my sister-in-law. I once made the mistake of telling her she was better suited for Blake, and she gagged.”

From what I remember, she was in my little brother, Blake’s, class.

“Bethany has a sister?” Freya shrieked with disgust.

It was why Dex recognized Oreo’s last name. Her sister and Freya didn’t have a good relationship. Hell, that bitch didn’t have a good relationship with anyone in this town. Yet, Ore—Oriana didn’t seem to be anything like her. Where Beth dressed provocatively, Ori had more of a sophisticated look.

“Yeah, a younger sister,” I answered.

“Who was in love with Clark.”

I glared at my brother, and right on cue, Freya started to crack up.

“She was in love with you?”

“She was a little kid.”

This made her laugh harder. “That explains it, but what does she have to do with anything?”

“She’s the one who started the fight and broke a bottle on Prescott’s nose because she thought he was trying to kidnap her.”

At this, Freya lost it. Once she recovered herself, she pulled out her phone. “Emma. I need you to cover for me. I need to go visit my favorite brother-in-law. It will take one hour max, and I’ll owe you one.”
