“Would you like to become a cop for a day?”

That was not what I thought he would say. When Lucas looked up to me and beamed, his eyes full of hope, I knew I couldn’t leave. He had been let down so many times in his short life, and I would not be the person doing any more of that. I smiled at him to encourage him. Clark may have been many things, but he was great with dealing with children and their hearts. He was nice to me while I was still young. When I stopped being young, he had crushed me. Even if it was the right thing to do, it still stung.

“Can I, Ori?” he asked, and it broke my heart how he always needed constant reassurance.

“That’s okay, bud.”

Clark motioned for the lady to come forward. “Jane here is going to take you through training, then Ore—” He looked up at me, but I couldn’t decipher what kind of stare it was. “Oriana and I will be at your graduation.”

Lucas was beaming. He looked at me for reassurance as he took Jane’s hand, then they disappeared to a room. I was about to thank Clark for being incredibly sweet to Lucas when he was dragging my ass toward a room.

I tried to pull my arm away from him, but he wasn’t letting go.

“Hey, let—”

The door to the room we had walked into slammed.

“What the hell were you thinking?” Clark seethed.

Okay, maybe that look I couldn’t quite decipher was rage mixed with something else.

“What the hell wasIthinking?Youare the one who had your lackey drag me to the station.”

“Now is not the time to get cute.”

My mouth opened and closed of its own accord. He thought I was being cute?

“What you did was dangerous and irresponsible,” Clark spat.

I scoffed. Now I was angry. And if I was someone else, I would have cowered, but you couldn’t be pressed if you feared the law. No respectable journalist would let themselves get trampled all over.

“If thepolicewould do their job, I would not need to go on my own to get my phone. Everyone knows it would take seconds to track a cell, but it falls short on the priority list.”

I was angry. I hadn’t noticed at what point I began to poke his chest, but there was no stopping me now.

“I didn’t break any laws. All I did was use an app that told me where my phone was and then went ahead andknocked.”

This somehow made Clark angrier. He took a hold of my wrist and lifted my arm out of the way. His hand was warm and calloused, and it burned in the best way.

“You knocked at a fucking meth house.”

Out of all the things I thought he would say, that was not one of them.

“Oh.”

Maybe he did have a point. I was too busy thinking about all the ways that could have gone wrong, especially with Lucas, when something warm cupped my cheek.

“You could have gotten hurt, Ori,” Clark stated as he looked into my eyes.

Oh. My. God.

I tried to step back; I swear I did. My heart was speeding up, and my stomach dropped.

Nooo. Please tell me that’s not the flutters I’m feeling.

The flutters were dead. They had been dead for years. I was a dumb kid.

“I’m fine,” I squeaked. “I can take care of myself.”
