“Fuck, is he pissed?”

“You’re asking this now after you had loud, dirty sex with her?”

“Please stop saying that.” He paled some more. “It’s weird.”

“And listening to your sex noises was completely normal.” I rolled my eyes.

“I’m sorry, okay? No one said anything, so I figured we’d gotten away with it.”

“Are you two, like a thing?”

“We’re… It’s complicated,” he sighed. “Has Mom called you? She keeps leaving me voicemails.”

“No, I haven’t spoken to her since I got here.”

“Can you call her? Try and get her off my back.”

“Austin…”

“I know, I know. But I have a lot riding on this season. I don’t need her sticking her nose in. And now you’re here—”

“You’re pinning this on me?” Disbelief coated my words. “Has it ever occurred to you that maybe she just misses her son?”

He let out a bitter laugh. “We both know that is not true. She’s never had time for me or my dreams.”

“It’s one phone call, Austin. Would it really hurt you to appease her?”

God knows, I’d spent half my childhood doing it.

“She’ll listen to you,” he said.

“Seriously? That’s your comeback. Unbelievable.” Irritation skittered down my spine.

“What?”

“You really have no idea, do you? What it was like for me growing up with her?”

“I know, Rory.” His jaw clenched. “I was right there.”

“That’s just it. You weren’t there, Austin. You were always at practice or hanging out with your friends or off at hockey camp.”

“That’s not—”

“Yeah, Austin.” Sadness clung my words. “It is.”

“I couldn’t be at home, around her.”

“I know, but I was there too. And I needed you. I needed—” My brother.

“Aurora?”

“It doesn’t matter,” I said, shoving down all the hurt, the pain and betrayal. “I need to get to class.”

“Come on, Sis. We need to talk about this. I know it isn’t good timing, but we could go and get a coffee and—”

“I can’t.”

“Aurora…”
