Noah: Yeah, later should work. I’ll text you when I’m done here.
Aurora: Okay.
Another text came straight through.
Aurora: Noah… we’re good, right?
Noah: Of course, shortcake. Talk later.
“What the fuck is the matter with you?” Connor asked the second Ella’s door swung open.
“Can I come in?”
“No,” he said as Ella shouted, “Yes,” from somewhere inside her apartment.
“Kitten, you promised me—”
“Don’t mind Connor,” she appeared, ducking under his arm. “What’s up?”
“I fucked up.”
“Well, in that case… come in, make yourself at home, don’t mind my blue balls.”
“Babe!” Ella elbowed him in the ribs.
“Thanks, I appreciate this.” I made a beeline for her couch.
“So… You fucked up?” she asked, sitting in the chair opposite me.
“I slept with Aurora.”
“Well, we didn’t think you were taking her home last night out of the goodness of your chivalrous heart,” Connor scoffed, and I flipped him off.
“Babe, be a doll and go get us all a drink. Something tells me we’re going to need it.”
“Did something happen? With the sex?” Ella blushed a little, and I arched a brow.
“Really, El. The word sex embarrasses you, and yet you have no problem with fucking your guy like a porn star in our shared house. The house with walls thinner than—”
“Watch it, Holden.” Connor thrust a beer at me and went to sit beside Ella.
“This intervention is about your sex life, not mine,” she scolded.
“The sex isn’t the problem.”
“That good, huh? Who knew little Hart would be a firecracker between—”
Ella slapped her hand over his mouth and shook her head. “You were saying, Noah?”
“In case you haven’t noticed, Aurora has… issues.”
“Don’t we all, sweetie.” Ella gave me a reassuring smile that did little to ease the giant fucking knot in my stomach. “But yes, I gathered there’s some stuff going on with her. She confided in you about it?”
“Some of it.”
“That’s good that she feels she can talk to you about it. Although, I’m surprised she told you the truth about her ex.”
