“What about her ex?” I frowned, not liking the sheer panic in her eyes.

“She didn’t tell you? Oh, shit. Me and my big mouth. It doesn’t matter. It’s nothing. Forget I ever said—”

“Ella…” I growled.

Connor shoved her hand away and glowered, jabbing his finger at me. “Growl at my girl again, Holden, and you and me are going to have a problem.”

“What do you know?” I asked, forcing myself to calm the fuck down.

“Noah, it’s not my story to tell.”

“Kitten, you should tell him. She’s as good as his girl. He has a right to know.”

Ella scoffed, “Jesus, you’re such a bunch of overbearing assholes. And I’ll have you know, Connor Morgan, just because I’m yours doesn’t ever mean you have the right to know things that are deeply personal to me.”

“El, babe, I didn’t—”

“Shh.” She silenced him with a finger to his lips. “I will tell Noah, but only because he looks so sad and pathetic. And because I expect him to do the right thing with this information.” She arched a brow at me, and I held up my hands.

“I promise.”

“Good. Firstly, what did she tell you about the ex?”

“That he decided he didn’t want to do the long-distance thing, so he ended things. She gave me the impression he really hurt her.”

“I wish it was that simple.” Ella’s featured tightened with a mix of anger and sympathy. “He was sleeping with her best friend behind her back. Aurora found out when she walked in on them.”

“She…” My body trembled with barely restrained anger.

“Yeah, it was bad.” She looked to Connor for help, and he let out a heavy sigh.

“Motherfucker.” I curled my fist against my thigh.

“Yep,” Ella said. “I can’t even imagine how that must have felt… and then to have to keep going to school with them. Seeing them every day. Knowing the whole time they were laughing behind your back.”

“I’ll kill him,” I said. “I’ll fucking kill him.”

“You might just get your chance,” Connor murmured, and my head shot up.

“What did you say?”

“Coach posted the schedule earlier. We play Fitton U the second weekend of the season.”

“Connor! Don’t encourage him.”

“Babe, the guy sounds like a total douchebag. And it’s Rory.” He shrugged. “I love her like a sister.”

Ella’s expression softened. “Yeah, she is pretty great. She deserves—” She stopped herself, but it was too late.

Her unspoken words hit me like bullets, tearing through the ice around my heart.

“Deserves better than me?”

“Noah, that’s not what I was going to say.”

“No, but you’ve thought it.”

“We’re just worried, man.” Connor squeezed Ella’s hand, drawing a line between us.
