“Why would it be a problem? I fucking love cookies.”

“For a bunch of hockey players, you sure do all seem to eat a lot.”

“We’re growing boys, ba—” I stopped myself, confused at how easy it was to fall into this back and forth with her.

“Fine. Here. But only one.” She pushed a cooling rack toward me, and I helped myself to a chocolate chip.

“This is good,” I said through a mouth of gooey, chocolatey goodness. “Aren’t you having one?”

A strange expression passed over her. “I’m okay. I’ll have one later.”

“Well, get in there quickly because you live with three hockey players now. If you leave that rack out, those cookies are going to be gone quicker than you can say, ‘Noah Holden is the best I’ve ever had.’”

“Best, what exactly? Pain in my ass?” Aurora grinned, clearly pleased with herself.

And surprisingly, I found myself grinning right back.

“You know what, baby Hart? You’re not all that bad. I know we had a rocky start, but you and me? I think we can be friends. What do you say?”

“So long as you don’t try and sleep with me, then I suppose it doesn’t sound too awful.”

“Yeah?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

“Well, then, Rory, you just got yourself a new best friend. Get ready, and I’ll take you out in Connor’s truck and give you the grand tour.”

“Actually, I have plans tonight.”

“Plans, with who?” Dejection swarmed in my chest for the second time at the hands of Austin’s little sister.

It shouldn’t have mattered. I had a contact list full of people who would love to hang out with me. I was motherfucking Noah Holden, but Aurora had made my easy-go-lucky persona falter. And I had been a dick to her—about her.

“If you must know, Ella invited me over for girls’ night.”

“She did, huh? Well, I think you’re making the wrong decision. I happen to know for a fact that I’m better company than Ella Henshaw.”

“She invited Dayna too.”

“And what does girls’ night entail exactly? Painting each other’s nails, pillow fights, and gossiping about boys?”

“Pillow fights?” She gawked at me. “You’re not serious?”

“You mean girls’ night doesn’t entail half-naked girls jumping up and down on the bed, pillows in hand, feathers flying everywhere… because if it doesn’t, you just destroyed my favorite teenage fantasy.”

“You’re an idiot.” Aurora tried to suppress a smile but failed miserably.

“Made you smile though, didn’t I?”

“Fine, I’ll give you that. Now go away, you’re annoying, and I need to get ready.”

“So you’re really going to pick a night of pillow fights over a night on the town with a Laker?”

“Don’t talk about yourself in the third person. It’s weird.” She brushed past me, shooting me a bemused look. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I…” I shook my head, trying to focus. “You have some flour, right”—I lifted my hand, gently cupping her face and brushing the pad of my thumb over the spot—“there.”

“Thanks.” Aurora’s cheeks turned the cutest shade of pink. She looked fucking adorable all wide-eyed and flushed.
