The fuck?

Where the hell had that thought come from?

“I… uh, yeah.” I snatched my hand away and shoved it in my sweats pocket.

“Right, well, I need to get a shower ready for all the pillow fights. I guess I’ll see you around.” Her lips twisted with amusement as she ducked around me and hurried out of the kitchen.

And all I could do was watch her go, reminding myself that Aurora Hart was definitely not my type.

CHAPTER 5

AURORA

“Oh my God, he didn’t,” I said, smiling so hard that my jaw hurt.

Dayna grinned back, taking a sip of wine before she nodded. “He just smacked one right on me as if he went around kissing random girls all the time.”

“I hate to break it to you, sweetie,” Ella said. “But he did go around kiss—”

“Oh hush, you.” Dayna grabbed a cushion and threw it at Ella’s head. “He doesn’t do it now; that’s what counts.”

“It must be hard, the distance thing.”

Her expression sobered. “I won’t lie. I’ve been feeling pretty insecure. Especially after what happened with my ex, Josh. We’d barely been apart a week when he cheated on me.”

“Asshole,” Ella murmured.

“Here, here.” Dayna leaned over and clinked her glass against Ella’s. “But what I have with Aiden is different, and I have to trust in that. In us. We’re in a good place, and Dupont Beach is only forty minutes away.”

“I don’t think I could do it,” I mused, and they both frowned.

“What do you mean?” Ella asked.

“Be with a college athlete. Not like it would ever happen.”

“What are you talking about?” Her gaze slid to Dayna’s in question, and embarrassment enveloped me.

“I… um, you know. Look at you two and look at me. I’m a mess.” I tugged awkwardly at my I party with Mr. Darcy t-shirt and forced a smile. But they didn’t smile back, and I got it.

Ella had invited me to girls’ night, and I was being weird. I hadn’t meant for it to slip out, but it had. And now I couldn’t take it back.

“Aurora? Is there something—”

“I’m fine.” I smiled. “It sounds like you and Aiden are the real deal.”

My stomach knotted, my heart aching in my chest.

I’d had that once.

But it had all been a lie.

“God, I hope so. It’s crazy, right? A few months ago, I was worrying about moving back home. At figuring out my relationship with Josh, and now I’m dreaming of a future with Aiden.”

“I’m so happy for you guys,” Ella said. “I’ve been waiting for one of the guys to get a girlfriend. Being the only WAG sucks. At least now, with two of us, we might stand a chance at keeping the puck bunnies at bay.”

“We could always make Aiden and Connor get tattoos on their foreheads saying, ‘off the market,’” Dayna chuckled.

“Surely, they’re not that bad,” I said, relieved they’d moved the conversation onto a new topic.
