When I returned to the table, Ryan had his phone pressed to his ear. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but it wasn’t like I had much choice, given I needed to return to our table.

As I drew closer, there was something about the way he laughed that sent a chill down my spine.

“I don’t know. I think she’s got some weird food hang-up. I bought her a muffin, and she freaked out. I mean, she’s not a whale or anything.” He laughed again, making my heart drop. “Hell yeah, her porn star tits are every guy’s wet dream, but she gets zero points for effort. She looks like a thrift store reject in this godawful—” He looked up, and the blood drained from his face. “Shit, I gotta go. Aurora, it’s not—”

I turned around and made a beeline for the door, abandoning my jacket and the stupid muffin. The second I hit the sidewalk, the tears unleashed, running down my cheeks in rivers.

Ryan was supposed to be nice.

A good, nice, safe guy.

I should never have come tonight. But I’d let Harper believe I could do it—that I could go on a casual date with someone. Maybe part of me had also wanted to get back at Noah for encouraging me to say yes.

And look how it backfired.

Pulling out my cell phone, I managed to text Connor.

Aurora: Can you pick me up?

Connor: What happened?

Aurora: Turns out English majors are assholes too.

Connor: Shit, send me your location. I’ll be there ASAP.

Aurora: Thank you. And Connor…

Connor: Yeah, little Hart?

Aurora: Don’t tell Austin please.

Connor: Consider it done.

“Thank God,” I breathed as Connor’s truck came into view.

Except, it wasn’t Connor who hopped out.

“Noah?” I gawked at him as he strode toward me.

“What happened?”

“N-nothing, I… nothing.”

“Aurora.” His voice was a low gravelly warning that made my stomach twist and tighten. “I swear to God if he hurt you—”

“He didn’t, not in the way you’re thinking.”

Noah’s brow crossed as he stared down at me, anger radiating from every solid inch of him.

“Where’s Connor?”

I could have sworn hurt flashed in his eyes, but I had to be seeing things because Noah had made it clear where he stood.

Where we stood.

He’d pushed me into Ryan’s arms. So why the hell was he standing here, looking ready to defend my honor with nothing more than his fists and anger?

“Ella called upset. Something about her gran. He headed over there, and I headed here.”
