Oh. That killed any seed of hope I’d felt that his white-knight routine might be anything more than friendly concern.

“Is she okay?”

“You’re standing on the street corner with mascara running down your face, shortcake, and you’re asking if Ella’s okay? I will never understand women.” He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

“Take me home, Noah.”

It wasn’t supposed to sound so suggestive, but the words were out now, hanging between us like an undetonated bomb.

“Are you sure I don’t need to hunt him down and kick his ass because I will, you know?”

Why? The word teetered on the tip of my tongue, but I refused to ask. I couldn’t put myself out there only to be knocked down again.

Noah didn’t want me.

Or at least, he didn’t want me enough.

And I got it. I wasn’t the type of girl people expected him to hook up with. I didn’t fit the mold.

“Can we just go, please?”

“Shit, yeah, come on.” Noah wrapped his arm around me and led me to Connor’s truck.

The air was stifling as we both climbed in, the silence almost too much to bear. Noah gripped the steering wheel and stared out the windshield.

“Noah?”

“Just… give me a minute.”

A beat passed, and another.

I didn’t know what to say. I hadn’t expected him to show up.

He exhaled a long breath and fired up the engine, the truck rumbling to life beneath us.

“He made you cry.” His hands tightened, the blood draining from his knuckles.

“It’s not as bad as it seems. I… I reacted badly to some stuff he said.”

“What stuff? And don’t try to pacify me with some vague bullshit, shortcake.” Noah’s gaze flicked to mine. “I want to know exactly what he said.”

“Well, tough shit because I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Aurora…”

“Noah…”

“God, you’re infuriating, woman.”

“Me? Me?” I snapped.

“I just want to help,” his voice softened. “But you’re so fucking stubborn.”

“Ha,” I scoffed, disbelief plunking in my chest. “It was your help that landed me in this situation in the first place.”

“My help… what the fuck are you talking about?”

“Forget it.” I backtracked because getting worked up over something I couldn’t change was pointless.
