“What are brothers for?” They were for being by your side offering comfort and support, knowing what you needed without you having to say it. And so much more. Max was lucky to have brothers like Chase and Hunt.

He gave Hunt a bear hug before they rejoined the party.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Kenna stared at her parents’ haggard faces. They appeared to be barely functioning. She’d assured them she was fine and ordered them to go home and try to get some rest.

Max showed up with Chase and Shelby. Kenna ate her cake while Shelby showed her pictures of the wedding and filled in all the details.

Chase and Shelby only stayed an hour. Max stayed the night. Again.

He’d been quiet, but content to hold her hand and watch reruns ofThe Big Bang Theory.

He ran home this morning to get cleaned up and changed.

Her parents arrived a few minutes ago, looking like they hadn’t gotten any rest at all. They gave her a hug, took a seat, then both of them had remained silent, waiting for something.

“Mom. Dad. Are you okay?”

“Fine,” her mother automatically said.

“Nothing to worry about, dear,” her dad assured her.

They did not bluff well.

“Did the doctor tell you something about my condition that I should know?” She felt better today, less tired, more alert. They’d lowered her pain meds. Her wounds ached, but didn’t scream with pain anymore. Everything seemed like it was going in the right direction.

But maybe she was wrong about that.

Her mom put her hand over Kenna’s. “Everything is fine. The doctor said you’re making wonderful progress in your recovery.”

She sighed out her relief. “Then why are you both so on edge?”

Her mom’s eyes narrowed with anger. “We just want some answers. No one will tell us what exactly happened to Kyle.”

“I’d like to know that, too.” None of them would give her any of the details they did know.

“I can answer that.” Agent Gunn walked in, Max right behind him.

She liked Max in the fancy suit he wore to the wedding yesterday, but he looked damn good in black jeans, a gray thermal, and a black-and-white plaid shirt over it.

Max came right to her, leaned down, and kissed her in front of everyone. He stared into her eyes, checking to see that they were clear and focused on him.

She gave him a smile. “I feel a lot better today.”

Relief filled his eyes. Max turned to her parents. “I’d ask again how you both are, but I can see the strain. If there’s anything I can do to help, just name it.”

Her dad stood and shook Max’s hand. “You’re doing it by taking care of Kenna.”

“Well, that’s my pleasure.” Max took her hand and held it, then looked to Agent Gunn. “You called this meeting. What can you tell us about Kyle?”

Agent Gunn stood at the end of her bed. “First, I want to say that I’m sorry about what happened to you, Kenna.”

“How the hell did that guy get to her before your men got her away? You said you had someone watching the guy who killed Marcus.” Max’s anger rang in every word.

Agent Gunn took it in stride. “It’s complicated, but I’ll try to lay it all out so it makes sense. Kyle set up a meeting with the person he took the program from and offered to sell it back.”

“But that was a trap you set,” Kenna filled in, because it had seemed on her last call with Kyle that the two had spoken about what needed to happen to end all this. “Kyle was working with you.”
