But she didn’t answer the door.

In fairness, itwaslate, and she’d hosted everyone all day after moving back into her house. She was probably sleeping.

Like any sane person would be doing.

Like heshouldbe doing.

Instead of knocking on her door and peeping in through her windows and generally making a nuisance of himself.

Dumb.

He knocked again, a soft rat-a-tat that there was no way she would hear.

Except…then a light turned on in the hall.

And he watched as a shadow moved to the door.

A pause.

Then the lock clicked, and the knob turned and—

“Connor?” she asked. “Is everything okay?”

He sucked in a breath, willed his tongue, his voice box to form the right words to put her at ease, to send him on his way.

But all he could do was shake his head.

She studied him closely then moved.

He braced, prepared for the door to slam in his face.

Instead, she wove her fingers around his wrist and tugged him inside.

“So.”

She’d led him onto the back deck, past the rebuilt part of her house—and because Soph’s husband’s company had done the rebuild, it looked great, like it had never been burned, that no inch had been touched by flames or smoke.

Then she’d pushed him down into a chair, shoved a beer into his hand, and had sat down next to him.

Without a word.

Until now.

He turned from his introspection of the bottle to the woman who had him all twisted up inside.

“So,” he said softly.

She lifted a brow. “You going to tell me why you showed up at ten-thirty at night when you should be safely tucked into bed because it’s a school night?”

He smiled but stayed quiet.

Mostly because he didn’t really want to cop to why he was there.

Except…the night before at the beach had changed things between them. And really, after sharing what they’d shared, what was the point of keepingthisto himself?

“I worry sometimes,” he whispered.

She’d been looking down at her hands, but his words had her glancing up, brows pulling together. “About what?”
