“Of course you can. This is my home.”

“Exactly. This is your world, not mine.”

He frowns, the slight bumps over his nose scrunching together as his brow furrows.

“I said that wrong. This isourhome. You are my mate.”

Hiswhat?

Uxor mi… that’s what he said. It translated instantly in my head—mymate—and I guess I finally have confirmation. All along I thought ‘uxor’ meant ‘fuck’.

I was waaaaay off.

Even better, Loki says ‘mate’ and as though he explains the concept without words, I know instantly that Sombra demons spend their entire lives searching for their one true mate. Their one true love. When they found them, they claim them and bond them together, sharing their life and their—

Essence.

It happened again. Like I’m plugged right into his brain, I know things he does. Things I shouldn’t.

What did he do to me?

“I thought your—”

“Essence,” supplies Loki.

“Right. I thought that that just made it so that we can speak to each other in Sombran. But that’s not at all, is it?”

“I gave you everything I am.”

I really have to yank my head out of the gutter. When Loki said he gave me his ‘essence’, I just thought that was demon speak for his jizz. It’s not. A closer translation in English would be ‘soul’.

Because he’s my soul mate.

No. He’s mytrue love.

Or he thinks he is. It’s why he stole me. It’s why he bends over backward to give me everything he thinks I need. Why he feeds me. Helps me wash my hair. Curls up into bed next to me to share my warmth.

It’s why he’s constantly aroused around me. I’m not just any woman.

I’m his.

As though he knows what I’m thinking—and who knows, maybe hedoes—he insists again, “You are my mate.”

And Loki is convinced that his mate must live with him. He will never, ever take me home.

When that realization hits me, I know that I never really expected to. Not after I’d spent a couple of days with Loki, and especially not after I can reach inside of him and make him tick.

I’m bonded to the beast, and whether he seems a lot less beastlike now that I can understand him, it doesn’t matter.

Somehow that makes itworse.

“I think I liked you better when I couldn’t understand you,” I snap at him.

“Kennedy—”

I can’t go outside. We both know it’s not safe for me. But Loki… he goes out there all the time to hunt. He took down that arkoda thing without breaking a sweat.

I point through the open door, gesturing at the closed one that would lead outside. “Go away, Loki.”
