“Is that what you want?”

I want some space. “Yes.”

He takes a deep breath. Shudders it out. “I will do anything for you. I want you to know that.”

I do, and that’s what makes this so freaking confusing.

Without another word, Loki starts for the door. When he reaches it, he tosses one glance over my shoulder, takes a deep breath, and shoves it open.

One step. That’s all it takes. One step outside and Loki goes up in flames like a fireball. So used to the dark shadows, the red and orange flames tipped with white are blinding. It’s excruciating, but knowing that fireball was Loki a split second ago is a million times worse.

I can’t look away. In a panic, I rub my eyes quickly with the heels of my hands, desperate to get some of my vision back. Hoping that, when I do, it’ll have all been a trick… or a mirage… something.

I squint.

He’s still burning.

Oh my God. Oh myGod.I told him to go and Ikilledhim.

“Loki.” Tears spring to my eyes as I take a few frantic steps toward him. Not because my eyes are in agony—which they are—because the idea of losing my demon even if I’m pissed at him is too fucking much to bear. “Loki,no!”

“Shhh.” As fast as he went up in flames, he’s back. The room smells like rotten eggs and burnt hair, but when he meets me in the bathroom, he looks perfectly unharmed.

I’m glad it stinks. If it didn’t, I’d think I’d imagined that. The lingering heat and the rotten air are all that’s left of the fire.

Now that I see he’s okay, I start to fume again. How could I have forgotten?

He can wield fire. He uses it to cook hunks of meat for me. His essence whispers the word ‘mage’ to me. Before he came to live in the shadows, he could do magic. It’s slowly been coming back to him… how do I know that that wasn’t a trick?

“Did you do that on purpose?” I demand.

“You leak.”

I shouldn’t laugh. This is the wrong time to laugh, but I do anyway if only out of relief that, trick or not, he’s okay. “It’s called crying, Loki.”

He nods sagely. “Of course. It’s more human magic.”

Only one of us can do magic here and it’s him.

“How did you do that?”

“It wasn’t me, my mate. The fire consumed me because of you.”

“No, it didn’t.”

Yes,it did.

I already know the answer thanks to whatever exactly his essence did to me, but so stunned at the revelation, I stay quiet as he explains.

“We have a mate bond. I’ve given you my essence. Until you share yours with me, that will happen anytime you go too far from me.”

And that’s not all.

There’s something called mate sickness. He’ll burn if I don’t give him my essence back and promise to be his bonded mate. Me? I’ll suffer from a burning fever and need to fuck him until I do.

You havegotto be kidding me.

“Did you know this would happen?”
