We don’t know what he has planned.

He could’ve said either, but the words didn’t come. Gage opened his arms so he could give her another hug. What else could he do? She needed comfort. Someone to stand beside her in the unknown. The worry of what might happen.

At least she didn’t run for the door.

Clare shook her head. “Later. Find something that says what his plan is.”

Guess it’s time to work.He studied her for a second, noting how hard it was for her to pull herself together. But she did it.

God, help us.

THIRTY-FOUR

Clare wanted nothing more than to step into his arms, or let him take over and solve this problem for her. But it washerbusiness. Her people, her friends and family. But she couldn’t.

Leaning on Gage would lead to letting him take the work of fixing her problems, and that wasn’t the woman she ever wanted to be.

Clare steeled herself against the freak out that boiled in her stomach. She bit down on her back teeth and tried to assess the stuff all over the walls like it wasn’t her livelihood. Her people. Someone was targeting the thing she held most dear. She would lose everything again and she’d barely survived last time.

Clare sucked in a breath, like she was trying not to cry—maybe she was.

Commotion kicked off by the door.

She turned to see Liam shove the guy she’d cuffed into the room. “This?”

The guy sputtered. “What..?” He looked around. “I’ve never been in here!”

Clare tried to get a read on whether that was the truth or not. “A woman was kidnapped the other day. She was held in that room.” Clare pointed over his shoulder. “You’re telling me you had no clue?”

He shrugged his shoulders, but it was difficult to do so with his hands cuffed behind his back. “I had no idea Berlin was into this.”

“Phoenix. Berlin.” Gage shot them a look. “Those are your real names?”

Clare figured the laundromat forgers might’ve made more than Aaron’s new IDs—before being shot.

“His name is Berlin.”

“And the rest of you?” Liam asked.

“London was in the van when it went over the cliff.”

Gage said, “So he’s the one you all murdered. Why?”

The guy lifted his chin, indicating Clare. “For talking too much to her. He was gonna give us away.”

Gage turned to Clare. She told him, “At the bank, during the robbery.” To the kid, she said, “Who killed the teller?”

“Berlin, of course. Miami was with him. I didn’t even see it.” He shifted his feet, desperation lacing his tone.

“Who is Miami?”

Disgust washed over his expression. “That traitor. Berlin said he was gonna take care of him.”

Gage looked at her. Clare mouthedAlex, and he nodded.

Liam tugged on the guy’s elbow. “What else did Berlin say?”

The guy tried to act like he had no idea. Clare wasn’t going to let her livelihood and the lives of people she knew hang on one uncooperative witness. “You ever heard the name Vanguard?”
