Oh, fuck was right. “So, I’m trying to help him get out of being convicted for a murder that he didn’t commit. I went to Sacramento the other day to meet with his lawyer and tell her my story. She believes me but needs physical evidence.”

“How are you going to have any evidence from something that happened fifteen years ago?” she asked.

“I had a rape kit done, but it was never turned over to the police. It’s a long shot, but we’re hoping my grandma has it or knows where we can find it.”

“And that is why you need a couple of days off.”

“Ding, ding,” I sighed. “I need time off so I can save Jonathon because he saved me all of those years ago.”

“This is crazy.” Dorothy sat back on her butt.

“Yeah,” I agreed. “Looking back at it now, I should have gone to the police. The proof was right there, showing what happened, but I was so scared. Jonathon took care of everything, and then the next day, I left and never looked back.”

“If I ever need to keep a secret, I know you and Mace can keep it.”

“Yeah,” I laughed. “We both would have taken it to the grave if Darrin Bing hadn’t started digging around.”

“What happens if you can’t find what you need in San Diego?”

That was what I didn’t know. We had a slight chance of convincing a judge or jury of what happened, but there was that damn fingerprint that might be our undoing. “Uh, we’re trying not to worry about that. I’m praying for a miracle that my grandma saved the report from the hospital, or it’s still at the hospital.”

“Go now,” Dorothy blurted. “I don’t care if we’ve got ten bodies piled up, Imogen. You need to get out of here and get to San Diego. Mace’s life is on the line, and so is yours.”

I chuckled and shook my head. “I don’t need to leave this second, but I do need to leave soon.” Like tomorrow. I was trying not to worry about the what-ifs if we didn’t get the rape report from the hospital, but I knew if we didn’t find it, we would need a plan B.

“Leave in the morning. I can more than handle this place while you are away.” She pointed at me and scowled. “Though I would like to say if we do get a body in the next couple of days, I will leave it for you to embalm because I am not mentally ready to jump back into that unless I have to.”

“Oh, Dorothy,” I laughed. “I promise not to be more than a couple of days.” I was hoping we would find what we needed right away and be back in Jackson in a day.

“Well, I’m not telling you that you have to come back if we get a body and you haven’t found your papers yet. If I have to embalm, I will.” She glanced at me. “But I would love you long time if your butt got back here before that happens.” She stood and pointed at me. “Call your biker and get packing,” she ordered.

“Why do I have to call Mace?” I asked.

“Because we both know that hunk of a man is going with you.”

“I told him he didn’t have to.”

Dorothy rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I’m sure he agreed to that.”

“Well, no,” I laughed.

“Call him,” she repeated. “I’m going to head to the basement and reacquaint myself with your area in case I need to actually work down there.”

“You’ll be fine,” I called.

“Yeah, yeah,” she muttered.

I grabbed my phone and pulled up Mace’s phone number. He had texted me good morning a couple of hours ago, and my heart still fluttered when I looked at the words.

My finger swiped his name, and the phone started ringing. I put it on speaker and set it on my desk.

“Imogen?” he answered.

“Uh, hi,” I chirped.

“Everything okay?”

Nothing was okay with everything still in the air. “Uh, I’m fine. I was just calling to let you know when we could head to San Diego if you still wanted to go with me. If you don’t, I can’t totally go myself. I don’t mi–.”
