“Imogen,” he interrupted. “I’m coming with you. What time did you want to leave?”

“Uh, well, probably the earlier, the better. Six?” That would get us there around two if we factored in stopping for gas and food.

“You think that is early enough?” he asked. “I know you can’t be gone from work that long, so maybe we should leave at five, and that would still give us a good part of the day in San Diego.”

“You’re okay getting up that early? You’re going to have to leave Sacramento around four, then.” I was okay with leaving earlier, but Monk would have to be up even earlier.

“Or I can crash on your couch tonight, and we can both sleep a little longer.”

“Oh, uh,” I stammered.

“Unless that’s not okay with you.”

Of course, it was okay with me. Maybe. I mean, why not, right? It made the most sense. “Sure. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that. You can come over for dinner tonight, and then we can leave early in the morning.” I took a deep breath. “Slumber party.” I closed my eyes. “Popcorn,” I whispered.Dear, God, just take me now. Right here. Put me out of my misery. Why could I not shut up?

“Imogen,” he called.

“Uh, yeah?”

“Take a breath, babe.”

“I’m kind of hoping for a hole to appear magically, and I can just jump right into it.”

“No,” he chuckled. “I just got you back, babe. I don’t want to have to go chasing after you into some magical portal.”

I sighed and buried my face in my hands. “I’m going to get off the phone now, Mace,” I muttered. “I think I have made a big enough fool of myself.”

“Okay, Imogen. I need to get some stuff done before I head your way tonight. I’ll be there around six?”

“Okay,” I whispered.

“Dinner?”

“I can see what I have in my fridge to make.”

“Nah,” he called. “We’ll go out. Just be ready.”

“Okay.”

“Bye, babe.”

“Bye-bye.” I stabbed the button to end the call and faceplanted onto my desk.

“Girl.”

“Go away, Dorothy. I just made a fool of myself in front of Mace, and I would just like to die of embarrassment in peace.” Why was it so hard to keep my thoughts inside my head? Slumber party?

Jesus.

“I think when you say bye-bye, it is really cute.”

Ugh.

“Please don’t remind me of other embarrassing things I do.” If we started doing that, the list would be a mile long.

“When are you leaving?” she asked.

“Early tomorrow.” I lifted my head and wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. “He’s coming over for dinner and then staying the night.”
