“And by killing him, you also determined Benedict’s fate. That was always going to happen, Mariah. The ricochets of Vemis’s death are being experienced across the world. Those who have done evil and live in hate and bloodlust are already passing. His line was full of evil. Everyone he turned was infected by it,” Lady Catherine explained.

“But he did not drink blood,” Mariah cried.

“And that’s why he will perish. Benedict didn’t turn and has run out of transition time. He’ll die a man, human, a Knight of God, and a genuine hero of God’s Scourge,” Lady Catherine replied.

“No!” Mariah shrieked. “I love him. He can’t pass!”

“Mariah, listen, I have mere moments. You need to understand what I said wasn’t me. I love you. And wherever you walk, I shall be by your side always,” Benedict murmured as the hand holding hers fell to the floor.

“Lucian!” Mariah screamed as Maggie dashed in.

Lucian was coming to as Maggie helped him sit up. His dazed gaze turned to Benedict in Mariah’s arms.

“No!” Lucian howled and scrambled across the floor. His hands hovered over Benedict’s face.

“Brother, glad am I to see you living,” Benedict whispered.

“Bene, no, I forbid this! You cannot die!” Lucian demanded.

“Not even you can stop true death,” Benedict said, and his eyes closed.

His chest stopped rising, and Mariah screamed her pain as Lucian laid his head down upon Benedict.

Lucifer

“Now, Metatron,” he commanded.

Metatron flashed into the inn, his light filling all sides of it. He stepped up as Lucian and Mariah gathered Benedict close to protect his body.

“Do not be afraid,” Metatron said gently.

He touched Benedict’s heart and found it pure. But the vampire venom remained in his veins. Using his strength and a delicate touch, Metatron chased the poison until it leaked from Benedict’s mouth. Then, Metatron blasted it away into nothing with an Angel’s Touch. Lucifer stood behind him, nodding in approval.

Metatron looked at Mariah, still holding Benedict protectively, and smiled. Mariah couldn’t see it, but she was so brave. Metatron restarted Benedict’s heart with a blast of power and placed a hand over his head. With a deft move, Metatron healed any long-term damage caused by being in transition and, once satisfied, he stepped away, his job done. He touched Mariah on her shoulder as she gazed up at him with awe and then faded into the background.

“You did it again!” Metatron accused.

He’d felt Lucifer’s restrictions on his power of giving life.

“You wish to challenge me, brother? Have we not had this conversation? You either trust me or not. Decide!” Lucifer challenged.

“Is it wrong to ask for an explanation?” Metatron argued.

“And when I’ve already explained, I can’t give one yet? You still push; is that not correct?” Lucifer retorted.

“Luc, just a few words!”

“Which I cannot offer!” Lucifer thundered. “I’m tired of being confronted and thought badly of. When this situation is ended, so shall I be!”

Metatron’s jaw dropped in horror and shock as Lucifer disappeared. He instantly sought Luc out, but Lucifer was adept at hiding himself.

Mariah

“Open your eyes!” she cried, shaking Benedict.

Lucian was watching his brother’s chest rise and fall. He reached out to stop her rocking him, but Benedict’s eyes flew open. Surprise crossed his face, and then Mariah dropped him on the floor and climbed on top of him, where she clung to him and smothered him with kisses.

“You didn’t do that to me!” St John commented to Henrietta.
