As I strode in measured steps, I silently asked the universe if that would be enough for me to earn the warmth of Amelia’s embrace once more, or even just to gaze into her ivy-green eyes again.

Amelia

I settled into my position at Soul & Strength easily and was amazed at how quickly I was welcomed into the company. They had several grant programs which encouraged their employees to pursue doctoral degrees, which I was ecstatic about, and the nicest clientele I had ever met. Unexpectedly, I even had some patients who followed me from Body, Heart & Mind like Leon.

“Look at you! You’re doing so much better!” I exclaimed when I saw him again, marveling at how the sixty-year-old wasn’t clutching his lower back as he moved anymore.

“Thank you,” he replied, a kidding twinkle in his eye. “Natalie worked wonders after you left, though I have to admit, I did miss seeing you.”

“And I you, Leon,” I smiled. “I’m sorry I had to leave on such short notice. You know how rich guys are—they want everything for themselves.”

Leon laughed as he tied the laces on his running shoes. “Something tells me that ‘rich guy’ had more to offer than a big paycheck. Was he handsome too?”

My mind succumbed once more to the fond memories I had of Josh—his rakish looks, the way he could talk about his favorite books for hours on end, and how he always seemed to know what my body needed. But that was merely a fantasy now and I responded with that in mind, “I won’t lie to you, Leon, he was very good-looking. I think that got to his head sometimes, though. He…he had this ex-wife that he kept around—I guess it made him feel young to have so many women around him.”

Leon sighed fondly. “That reminds me of my first husband, Kinsley. He was a sweet guy with a beautiful face and the passion of Casanova. I’m sure you can imagine the kinds of trouble he got himself into, all because he had more beauty than brains.”

As I guided Leon to the floor so we could begin his exercises, I chuckled, remarking, “It’s hard not to get jealous of them…for them, isn’t it?”

“Oh, I don’t know,” Leon said, reaching his arms forward to clasp my hands in his. “I like to think that the good ones always come back, regardless of how green they make our eyes.” He winked, gesturing to my shamrock-colored irises, making me roll them playfully.

“Alright, that’s enough chit-chat about boys,” I declared. “You and I have work to do.”

“You’re such a taskmaster, Amelia,” Leon mock pouted.

“Damn right I am,” I smirked back, shoving the memories of Josh deep into my subconscious.

Only later that night did I let my thoughts drift back to him, as I lay in bed with my auburn hair fanned out on the pillow and my legs spread for a man who wasn’t even there. Eyes squeezed shut even in the dark, I pictured him above me, plunging his length into me and hitting spots only he could.

I imagined the ghost of his touch on my hips and thighs, urging me to buck up against him and drive the tip of his manhood even deeper until he split me open like a juicy fruit. Begging for him softly and only heard by the shadows in my room, I climbed higher and higher, my muscles tightening in preparation for that final push.

With a final swipe of my thumb across my clitoris, I forced my fingers into my dripping core as far as they would go, clenching around the soaked digits as I cried out for him.

Panting and dappled with sweat, I fell back against my mattress, embarrassment creeping back in to replace desire. I knew it would take time for me to forget him, but how much longer would I have to suffer like this—the echoes of his name bouncing off my walls and an ache in my heart only he could salve?

In my lovers quest, I came upon a flier for a physical therapy convention in the city an hour north of where I lived. And, having nothing more than ambition and daydreams to rely on, I signed up as an “aspiring student,” knowing that with Amelia’s studious nature, if she’d moved to the city, this convention is where she’d be.

“This is a stretch,” Anthony said, shaking his head when I showed him the email from the convention center after I signed up. “What if someone recognizes you? You’ll have to turn Collective Expectations into ‘Careful Exercises’ or something like that.”

I ignored his joke with a roll of my eyes and a huff of a laugh. “This might be my last chance to find her, Tony. And Icanseem seriously interested in this stuff after everything Amelia showed me during our sessions.”

“I didn’t know having sex was an integral part of the physical therapy process,” Anthony teased, his tongue poking cheekily out between his teeth.

Mock glaring at my best friend, I sighed, “That’s not all that we did. She fixed my knee andthenwe did the fun stuff.”

“Touché,” he replied, gesturing to my right knee. “How’s that doing by the way?”

I placed a hand on it and rubbed, answering, “It feels loose sometimes, but the pain’s gone. I think I might be back on the slopes in January.”

“Maybe you can take Amelia with you this time,” Anthony speculated, tapping his chin pensively, “so that when you fuck up your knee again, she’ll be right there.”

Pushing my chair back and standing, I patted his shoulder tauntingly. “At least I might have a snow bunny to follow me around. Tell me again how much luck you’re having with the random girls you meet every night?”

Anthony’s mouth dropped open in shock and then he smirked. “See, all it took to get you back in the fighting spirit was to finally let Laila go, man!”

I chuckled and glanced down at my computer screen where the information for the convention was still displayed. “You were right, Tony,” I replied, earning a confident grin from my best friend, “and now we’ll see if I actually get the girl.”
