While Harry knew about my affair with Ariane, I wasn’t sure how to tell him that she used to be my son’s ex-girlfriend at one point in time. Then I remembered a quote I’d read in a book once: the best way to say something is to just say it. So, that’s what I did.

“No judgement?” I asked before I started. “This is a crazy story.”

“Hey.” Harry raised both his hands. “You’re in good company.”

I let my words fade away to add a little suspense to the story. Harry seemed like he was hooked already, but the long pause before the explanation moved him even closer to the edge of his seat.

“Ariane used to date Lucas.”

Harry nearly lost his footing on his treadmill when he looked at me in shock. I almost wanted to laugh at him, but I knew the matter was too serious for that.

“Your son, Lucas?” he asked for clarification.

“Yeah. My son. I didn’t know they dated, because she never even mentioned him, but yeah. They dated for three years. This is the same girl who had him so heartbroken that he kept lashing out at everyone.”

The story was a lot for Harry to process. I understood that, because it was a lot for me to process when I first found out. As time went on though, I felt differently about things. I started to feel like it shouldn’t matter if they had been separated for as long as they had been, and if he had been so terrible to her.

“Wow.” Harry shook his head in disbelief. “That’s a large pill to swallow. Have you and Lucas talked about this?”

“Not yet,” I sighed. “I’ve been trying to hold off because we already have some issues, and I think this’ll only make things worse. I just don’t know how to tell him. On top of that, I think I still have feelings for her.”

I summoned all my courage that night and called Lucas to end this once and for all. I was surprised when he did not lash out when he found out about my relationship with Ariane. He told me that he was embarrassed by how he had treated Ariane, and that he would treat her differently if he could turn back time. But, as a drug and alcohol addict, he couldn’t blame her for leaving him.

"I’m glad she was able to get back on her feet. Is she still working for you?” Lucas asked.

"No, son, I let her go. I didn't want anything to come between you and me after we finally patched things up last time, and I didn't know her real motive."

"Bianca’s a good girl, Dad. I was surprised she stayed with me for so long. She was confident she could change me, but I was addicted to drugs and alcohol, which clouded my judgment. I’m certain that her motive wasn’t revenge—she would never do such a thing.”

Chapter Nineteen

Ariane

Aftermythree-monthallowanceat the company apartment, I found a new place as well as a new job. Logan and I hadn’t spoken at all, and surprisingly, it wasn’t as hard as I’d thought it would be. Of course, I missed the smell of his cologne and the way he held me and kissed me, but things were on ice between us. Until I found out I was pregnant.

“Oh my goodness!” Trinity was shocked when I told her the news. “Are you keeping it? Who's the father?”

“What?” I scrunched up my face as I fought hard to keep my breakfast down. “What do you mean, who’s the father? Logan. He's the only man I’ve been with in a long time.”

“Well, have you told him? Do you even plan to tell him?”

I sighed when I thought of all the possible ways he would dismiss me or tell me to get rid of the baby. I had never even thought of becoming a mother. I felt like my life just wasn’t in the right space for that. When I’d been with Lucas, I always thought I was unable to have children. Because every time we tried, I always miscarried. But maybe it was the stress of our relationship.

“I mean, yeah. I have to tell him. He has a right to know.”

“Do you want the baby?”

Trinity's voice softened when she asked again. There was a soft look in her eyes to accompany it too. She had children of her own, but she was always eager for me to give her a godchild.

“I don’t know.” I looked to her for advice. “I mean, can you imagine me being someone's mother?” I chuckled. “At twenty-six, I don’t know what I'm doing. Besides, my career is finally back on track. I don’t think I'll have time.”

After a long talk with Trinity about my pregnancy, I took myself out for a nice dinner. Of course, I went to my favorite place—The Golden Apple—for my favorite chicken wings and substituted my apple martinis for apple juice instead. I sat for a while before a familiar scent hit my nose. I thought I was in some sort of daydream or déja vu, but I wasn’t. It was real. I looked over my shoulder to catch a glimpse of Logan exiting the doors.

The urge to go after him nearly knocked me from my chair, but I caught myself when I saw Sharron walking right next to him. They looked like they were happy together. The tears that swelled in my eyes became so heavy they fell right into my glass to help the ice water down my drink.

“Are you alright?” my waiter asked.

“Oh.” I quickly swiped my tears away. “Yes. Um, can I have the check please?”
