March 19th
It takes me three months to develop a plan to set up the private security company. Walter and Phillip not only help me during that time, but they also agree to work for me. This is just the beginning of what my future can be.
We’ve chosen the properties that’ll work for us. There are a few men we want to hire. The main training facility is going to be in Colorado. We won’t have headquarters, but I’ll have an office in New York. That’s where Charles’s companies are located, and once I take over those, I’ll be moving there permanently. Although Walter suggests I keep a small office in London.
When I’m ready with my proposal, I email Charles and call him immediately. The stubborn man is living in Costa Rica on the godforsaken farm. I told him not once but several times that it’s not safe to be there. His answer was simple, “I can’t live in fear.”
This is one big reason why I want to start my company. I’ll be in charge of his security. Charles Gil is an adventurer. He’s always looking for his next expedition, but the world is not safe. If he doesn’t stay in one place, he should at least let me take care of him.
“What can I do for you, Finn?”
“I just emailed you the proposal for the security company,” I say.
He sighs. “I browsed it, and I imagined that’s why you were calling me. What’s your motivation to create it?”
“Make sure that people like you aren’t in danger,” I say. “If you had had someone to look after you when—”
“Let’s not talk about the past because personally, I like that you came into my life. I’m glad to have you as my son.”
“I’m grateful for all you’ve done for me. It is because I love you that I want you to be safe, Dad.”
He chuckles. “Oh, Finn. This would be a great Hallmark moment. You finally called me Dad.”
“Sorry, I didn’t—”
“No, I like it. I wish I was there to hug you. I love you, and having you in my life makes me happy.”
“Maybe I can drop by to visit? Make it more official?” I feel weird now. Not because I called him dad or told him I love him, but because I should’ve done it before he left or maybe waited until he was back. “I can rent a plane and go to you.”
“No. We agreed that you’d stay away from here. What if that man has someone spying on the property?”
“Fine, I won’t go there, but can we discuss the security company?”
“You said Walter and Phillip will support you?”
“Yes. Phillip’s brother is a retired US Marshal who lives in Colorado. He owns a ranch, and there’s plenty of land in Heartwood Lake that we can buy. We can set up part of the training facilities there.”
“You really thought this through, didn’t you? But do you have enough people that can work with you? People you trust?”
“Walter and Phillip will recruit a few good men, but we’ll find more. My next call is to Derek.”
“The SEAL who helped you while you were with Zamudio?”
