She shakes her head. “I…”

“Breathe, Piper. It’s okay. Apparently, sex is a hard limit for you. Are you a virgin?”

“No, I’m not. I had a happy and healthy sex life with my fiancé.”

“But nothing since he…”

“Can we move on, please? Are you sure you’ll be okay without me?”

“Yes. We close at eight, and you’ll be back next Monday. Everything will be fine.”

She gives me a sad smile. “Did your lawyer give you the green light to visit your niece and nephews?”

“Yes. Their father isn’t as bad as my sister made him sound. But if only she had tried to work out their separation like an adult instead of throwing a tantrum and thinking she could get her own way.”

“When is her next hearing?”

I run a hand down my face. “February of next year.”

“Sorry. I wish things with your family were different.”

“It is what it is. Did I mention Benedict is doing his residency here in New York?”

“No, but I’m glad. Maybe you two can start building a relationship.”

Will we? Ben wanted to stay in San Francisco close to the Spearman family, but I made sure Columbia gave him a better offer than the other places he applied to. I want him to succeed, and I know this is the place for it. But maybe when he learns what I did, he’ll hate me and… well, there goes my hope of having any kind of relationship with him.

“We’ll see.” I shrug.

“I believe in you.”

“Why don’t we go to my place to feed you? After that, I’ll take you to the train station.”

“You want to get rid of me?”

“No, but I at least want to make sure you get there safe. If you allowed me, I would rent a jet.”

If she allowed it, I would go with her. No, I would kiss her. This is getting too fucking frustrating. I want to continue working with her, but my self-control is slipping, and one of these days, I’m going to do something stupid.

“Trains are greener, but thank you for the offer.”

“What about a bodyguard?” I dare to ask. “Can I hire someone for you? I can contact HIB and get you a guy for the weekend.”

She laughs as if I just said the most ironic thing in the world. “No. Actually, don’t ever dare to suggest that again. I know how to defend myself.”

“A simple class at the YMCA won’t cover it.”

“I’ve trained martial arts since I was young, and I’m a black belt in a few of them. I know how to handle a firearm and a knife.” She glares at me, nostrils flaring and ears fuming.

“You’re kidding, right?”

She waves a hand and smiles. “Of course. I’m just a defenseless musician. Now let’s go and eat.”

“Piper, you look dead serious. What are you not telling me?”

She grins. “It’s confidential, Dr. Farrow. There are things that big bad SEALs can’t handle.”

I’m curious to learn more about that, but I won’t insist because she’s going to want my secrets, and I’m not going to share them with her.
