ChapterFifty-Three

Finnegan

At seven p.m.,Derek is outside the brownstone ringing the doorbell. I’m satisfied with the cameras I installed around the house. Walter introduced me to a guy who’s helping me work in surveillance and how to delete the footage and replace it with old ones. This new ability doesn’t feel like it’s new. It’s almost like the time I began to take flying lessons or was taught by a sniper how to shoot.

It scares me to think that I’ve done this stuff before because it was probably to help the Zs destroy lives. The more I realize my life was attached to the cartel, the angrier I get. I shake with fury running through my veins and open the door for Derek.

I take a step back when I see him. He looks a lot different from the man who saved me. His hair is dark, and so are his eyes. He’s still tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular. I still find him attractive, but I no longer lust for him. My brain is finally in charge of my body.

“It’s good to see you, Travis,” he says, giving me a hug.

I tense up. “Finnegan,” I remind him. “The name is Finnegan Gil.”

“Sorry, it’ll take some time to get used to it. How long have you been in Manhattan?”

“Not long. I arrived when I called you.”

He nods but frowns. “So, where have you been all this time?”

I move away so he can enter. Once I close the door, I tilt my head so he can follow me to the open kitchen, where I have a bottle of single malt open. After I pour the liquid into the tumblers and offer one to him, I finally say, “Once I escaped from Central America, I hid in London.”

“That’s a long way from home. How did you end up there?”

If I want him on my team, I have to trust him with everything. And so, I tell him how after he left, I started actively working for Ricardo Zamudio. I don’t give him details of everything I did during the time and jump to the moment I met Dad.

“The people who tried to ambush the Zs failed, and they went underground. It seems to be their MO. I’m on the lookout for them.” I shrug. “Who knows when he’ll decide to come out since he lost one of his sons? If anything happens to him, the useless one will have to take command, and that’s the end of them.”

Derek nods. “I heard the same.”

“I thought you said you weren’t taking contracts.”

“I’m not, but it’s good to have an ear to the ground.” He taps his temple slightly. “It’s a precaution. So you live with your dad?”

“Charles lives all around the world. He’s an archeologist. You might’ve heard his name, Charles Gil.”

Derek grins. “Of course I have. I watch his show and even follow him on social media. He seems like a good guy.”

“He is a great person. But I didn’t invite you to talk about my past, but to extend you an invitation to become a part of my future.”

His brows shoot up. “Is that so? What are you proposing?”

My eyes open wide. Is he flirting with me? I didn’t expect that. Instead of following his lead, I say, “I want to start a security company, and I want you to be my partner.”

He crosses his arms, leaning his hip against the counter. “How is this going to work?”

I relax, knowing that he’s willing to listen to my plan. Hopefully, I can convince him to join me. Walter and Phillip are great, but I need someone like Derek on our team. “Why don’t you come to my office so I can show you my vision?”

He snorts. “A vision, huh?”

I nod and make my way to the office, where I already have the first page of the presentation on the big screen. The blueprints are on the desk, and I even have a copy of the documents I emailed Dad so he can go through them.

For the next three hours, I explain my plans to him, disclose what I’ve been doing and who I’ve been training with for the past couple of years. Once I’m done, I turn off the big screen and turn to him. “What do you think?”

He snorts. “You’re a mad genius.”

“Not about me, but this idea.”

His facial expression changes from relaxed to serious. His jaw tenses before he asks. “Is this show just so you can kill Zamudio?”
