Piper: She’s being spoiled by my fathers. Both are in love with the puppy. If I ever need a long-term babysitter, they’ll be perfect.

Derek: Have you ever had pets before?

Piper: Yep, we did. We had several pets. Sometimes we shared them with my cousins.

Derek: Why would you do that?

Piper: We lived in the same neighborhood and shared a backyard.

Derek: That’s weird.

Piper: It’s not. My father is part of the Decker triplets. They’re close and wanted to raise their families together.

Derek: I wouldn’t know what that means since I’m not close to my family.

Piper: How are things with Benedict?

Derek: Not bad. I offered him a job, and he accepted it. He even got me a few recruits.

Piper: This security company doesn’t sound like having bodyguards. Be safe, Derek Farrow.

Derek: Nothing is going to happen to me.

Piper: I’ve heard that before…. Things Happen. You Can Die. Disappear. Or Almost End Up A Paraplegic. You’re Not Invincible.

Piper: You know what? I’m not in a good place. Let’s chat later.

Derek: Why do I feel as if I did something to piss you off?

Derek: Piper, you can’t just ghost me.

Derek: Fine, we’ll talk later.

ChapterSixty

Derek

May 11th

Two months. Piper stayed away from New York for two long fucking months. We barely texted. She’s mad at me, and I can’t understand what triggered her.

“You’re finally back,” I say when I enter her office.

Halsey runs toward me and jumps around me until I pick her up. “How’s my girl doing?”

The pup licks me a couple of times before I tuck her under my arm, and I pet the top of her head.

“Hey,” Piper mumbles, her attention on the screen.

“Can we go upstairs to chat?”

“I have—”

“Piper, we need to talk,” I order.

“I have other things to do.”

“Clearly, but I’ve been patient with you and respected all your boundaries. Normally, I would’ve flown to Seattle to settle this, but I know you don’t want me there.”
