She huffs and looks at me. “What’s there to talk about? I was out of line.”

“You’ve barely spoken to me.”

“That’s on me. I’m better, okay?”

“No, it’s not okay. We’re going upstairs to clear the air.”

“Or what, you’ll quit?”

“No, I’ll fire you.”

“You can’t do that?”

“I can, and I will.”

She’s fuming, but I don’t care. As long as we talk this out, I can handle her rage.

When we reach the roof, I set Halsey in her play area before focusing on Piper. When she frowns and shakes her head, I realize she’s noticed the stitches above my brow.

“What happened to you?”

“Nothing.”

“Derek?”

“I got into a fight.”

“Doing your other job?”

“I’m okay.”

“What else happened? If I look under the shirt, will I find bruises and probably a bullet hole?”

“No, that was last month,” I joke.

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

“If I say no, would you get more upset?”

“This is why I told you not to do it. I can’t. I can’t…” She drops to the bench and begins to cry.

I squat in front of her. “Talk to me, baby. What’s happening?”

“You’re helping others, but in the meantime, I’m sitting in a corner praying that you come back. I can’t do it again.”

This might be some kind of breakthrough. “Archer? Was he a part of a security company?”

She nods.

“Just a few months ago, I held Grace’s hand because Beacon was fighting for his life.”

“Wait, Beacon is—

Piper flinches. “Sorry, I’m not supposed to say anything.”

“Hey, I would never give away your secrets or put anyone in jeopardy. Please, Piper, trust me.”

“HIB has a subdivision called The Organization. My uncle owns it. We… he taught us martial arts and how to use weapons. Some decided to become agents and work for him.”
