Nathan waves a hand, rolling his eyes. “It’s the same. Derek has a good background. Therapist, retired SEAL, and philanthropist. I like how their company works. Just never tell that to my brother or my father because I’ll deny it.”

“Do they know you work solo?”

Nathan snorts. “Dad would’ve grounded me for life.”

“He still thinks you’re five, huh?”

“It’s okay. I can get away with a lot of shit because he thinks I’m too young.”

“It’s time to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Beacon Aldridge,” the DJ announces, and we head to the dance floor to watch their first dance.

ChapterSixty-Seven

Finnegan

August 27th

I’m in the computer room when one of my alerts pops up on the screen. There’s a security alert somewhere. After a few searches, I realize it’s the new notifications from the facial recognition software I installed. I swear that kid needs to make things more functional and less distracting.

Although I should disregard the alert, I check who we caught on camera. My stomach drops when I see them. Zs in the wild. I take a few screenshots and send an email to Derek with the information.

Since the men had to go through customs, it’s easy to find the aliases they’re using and their ticket information. In less than three hours, they’re boarding a second plane to Seattle. It’s easy to find them through the surveillance footage. When they finally stop at their next gate, I can hack into their phones.

One of them calls a number in New Mexico, the other is using a burner phone and the call is going to Vermont. The third one is buying coffee for everyone, and because I feel petty, I break into the shop’s system and grab the credit card information.

What’s in Seattle? I don’t know, but I’ll be there to catch them and make them sing. This time Zamudio is getting what he deserves. After I ask my mechanic to get the jet ready, I call Derek.

“Hey. I didn’t think you’d be calling this fast,” he answers immediately.

“Did you read my email?”

“Yes. Where are they going?”

“The same place we are, my friend, Seattle.”

“Aren’t we supposed to stay away from there?”

“Probably, but I don’t want to lose track of them. We’ll just observe.” Unless they provoke me, and I shoot them because that’s what I like to do in my spare time—hunt bad people.

“The last time youjust observed, you killed five people.”

“They were criminals,” I argue.

“Still, you never stay put.”

I clench my jaw. “That’s why you’re coming with me, to make sure I behave.”

“Hi, Derek. Do you have a moment?” I hear a female voice.

“Give me a second,” I assume Derek says to me.

“So, there are a few issues at home, and I need to go,” whoever is speaking sounds distraught and anxious. “Will you be okay if I leave?”

“Are there any issues with the company, Piper?” Derek loudly asks, as if he wants me to listen.

“What company?” Piper sounds as confused as me.

“Your uncle’s company?”
