“Where are you going?”
“I have an Uber coming soon,” I lie, and I give her the car keys and get to the passenger seat to get Halsey. “There’s a gun in the glove compartment if you need it.”
“You can take your car.”
“No. I need to know you have a way to leave at any time.”
“Why are you being so difficult?”
“Because I care about you,” I try not to yell but fail. “I fucked up, and I’m sorry. I love you, Piper, and I don’t want to lose you.”
She shakes her head. “I can’t handle this. Not when things are…”
“Everything will be fine. Nothing is going to happen to your family, I promise.”
Piper looks at me. “They’re in danger, aren’t they?”
I shrug. “Maybe, but we’re here to protect them. Trust me, baby.”
I take Halsey out of her kennel and give her a kiss. “Be good to Piper, okay?”
Halsey licks me, and it hurts so fucking much to walk away, but I have to do it.

Because of all thesecurity at Seth Bradley’s estate, staying around is out of the question—he needs to remain unaware of my existence. My hope was that Derek would stick around with Piper and scan the house, but that didn’t play out the way I had hoped. We spend the entire evening researching the Decker family.
“You almost married music royalty,” I say mockingly.
“You should look into the St. James family, too,” he suggests.
“Nah, I doubt the Zs are here for them. The only reason people give two fucks about Theodora St. James is because she’s part of the circus Coco LeBlanc created.”
If only we could be inside the fucking estate. “I can’t believe you left the car to Piper. You could’ve used that as an excuse to return to the house.”
“She was going to get a ride from someone in her family. At least I left a tracking device in the rental.”
“Not that it helps me. Once she’s out, I’ll lose track of who can be my bait.”
He scoffs. “You’re using a trained operative as bait.”
“Great idea, right?”
Derek groans. “Have I ever mentioned you’re a mad genius?”
“A few times.” I shrug. “But I’m only doing what you taught me.”
“What did I teach you?”
“Use all the resources and opportunities that fall in your lap.”
“Ugh, I didn’t mean to use Piper and her family. She’s my… never mind. When are the Zs arriving in town?”
I grin. Thanks to a few complications, the flight was delayed several hours. I had to be ready for them. “The plane lands in an hour. While I visited the airport, I was able to put a tracker on an SUV, which will be designated to them.”
“Do you know how many laws you break when you hack computers?”
