“None, because when the government needs me, they give me immunity,” I joke.

Derek glares at me. “It doesn’t include what you do outside the missions.”

“Those details don’t matter. In any case, I know how to find them, and also that they have people in New Mexico. I have a team setting up surveillance there as we speak.”

“If anyone left the area before they arrived?”

“I’ve been scanning the cameras around the property. I got everything under control, D. Why are you all worked up?”

“I hate that Piper is involved.”

And I won’t admit it, but I loathe it too. Though I think I should hate that woman, there’s something in me that wants to protect her. If I have to kill her, I might be fucked up for the rest of my life.

“We’ll be out of here without making much noise. I’ll have a guy keep an eye on her while she’s in town, okay?”

“Fine.”

“D, I need your head in the endgame. I should be able to get rid of all the paparazzi by tomorrow. Having them here is just making things more difficult.”

Derek laughs. “You should be heading The Organization. It seems like you have more brains than the entire company.”

He’s joking, but I’m setting up camp in Seattle. If we had a training facility and safe houses here, I would be running this show differently.

Since the paparazzi are gone,Teddy St. James camps her ass at Piper’s house. Well, I wish they were staying there, but no, an hour after she arrives at the house, they leave. We spend all Saturday babysitting them. The bodyguard from HIB is a joke. He might be good at watching over celebrities, but he hasn’t noticed the two tails Piper and Teddy have.

If the Zs try anything, I’m ready to kill them, but I’m hoping it doesn’t get to that because I want to interrogate them.

On Sunday, two of my guys are surveilling Teddy and Seth’s places. I don’t understand their relationship. Ten years of marriage, and they live in separate homes? It’s odd, but maybe they do it for security reasons?

I should figure that out too. Is it smart to have my wife in a different house? Will it keep my child safe?

“Why am I not surprised that she’s going to another bookstore?” Derek groans.

“Books and music are her life. What do you expect?” I almost kick him out of the SUV.

“Do you see the van following them?” Derek asks, pulling out a gun. “They’re not the same people who followed them yesterday. We have more Zs in town. I’ll alert our people.”

I nod. “I was hoping they weren’t following our target.”

“Piper isn’t your target,” he growls.

“I’m parking in the back. You cover them on the ground, and I’ll be on the roof.”

“We’re taking them down, aren’t we?”

My hands grasp the wheel tightly. “They’re here to abduct them. Knowing their MO, they will keep Theodora alive to show Seth they can fuck with him and his family. They’ll kill Piper.”

My heart stops, and I’m covered in fear. I can’t be frozen by some stupid emotion that I don’t understand. My mind pushes my feelings deep inside the back of my mind. I focus on the operation. It doesn’t take long for me to reach the roof of the tallest building in the area. I put together my concealable sniper rifle I brought with me and add the sound suppressor.

“Is the bodyguard still with them? Where are you, D?” I ask through the communicator.

“The bodyguard is down.”

“You killed him?”

“No, they did.”

“Target acquired,” I announce. I’m covering both women. “Don’t do anything until they enter the bookstore. They’ll be safe there. We’ll take down—” But I can’t say anything else.
