The men surround them. One of them has a knife to Piper’s throat. She makes a few moves. Where did she learn them? Before the asshole sticks the knife in her throat, I kill him and the other guy. Piper is under the guy who attacked her. She probably has a concussion and some broken bones. I’ll call 9-1-1 once we’re on our way out.

Teddy glances at Piper and runs inside the bookstore.

“I’m breaking Remi down. Get ready to leave,” I say through the communicator.

“She’s hurt,” Derek mumbles.

“Leave her and let’s get the fuck out,” I order.

“Baby, are you okay,” I hear him almost breaking down. “Stay with me.”

“Archer. Is he here? I think he came for me,” she whispers.

Who the fuck is Archer?

“Fuck, she’s dying,” D almost whimpers, and that breaks my fucking heart. “Piper, don’t leave me.”

I make it to them in record time, pull out the syringe with sedation, and inject her. It’s usually for prisoners I need to interrogate, but in this case, I use it with her.

“Good night, Sleeping Beauty,” I say.

When she looks at me, her eyes open wide. “Arch,” she whispers before she closes her eyes.

“What the fuck did you do?” Derek growls.

“Carry her and get her in the car. We have to leave.”

“Where are we going?”

“To the closest doctor in the area? You have that intel.”

He exhales harshly as we rush toward the SUV. “Heath Spearman in San Francisco.”

“While I’m flying us there, call him and have people waiting. She has some broken bones. Make sure you get an orthopedic surgeon too.”

“What did you do to her?”

“I sedated her. You’re welcome.”

“If she dies, I’m going to fucking kill you.”

I make sure she’s secure in the back seat before settling into the front passenger seat. “Whatever, drive while I switch the CCTV. I don’t want anyone to trace this to us. Zamudio is getting messy, and we’re going to get that fucker.”

Piper doesn’t dieor wake up during the two-hour flight. When we arrive at the hospital, Heathcliff Spearman is waiting for us with a team. I text Wren, asking for the name of the sedative I used. She’s not happy that I just applied it without consulting her. I don’t understand why she’s surprised. After two years, she should know how I operate.

“Why did you sedate her?” Derek gets in my face.

“I didn’t want her to see me.” I know that doesn’t make sense, but if I explain to him why I did it, he’s going to ask more questions.

Questions I can’t answer, not even to myself.

It was the only way to make sure nothing would happen to her? She hit her head, if she had a concussion, it was best if I put her under sedation. I’m not a doctor, but I’ve seen that done several times. If Wren, who’s a doctor, gives me shit about it, I’m sure Derek is going to fuck up my face before he understands my reasoning.

He glares at me. “Why do I feel like you hate her when you don’t even know her?”

I scrub my face because I don’t have a logical answer.

“Finnegan, tell me now, or I swear I’ll walk away, and you’re on your own.”
