“Not that. How do you know I’m here?”

“She texted something about issues with her roommate and needing help moving to an apartment. Her brothers ignore her, which leaves us with the hero of the day”—I clear my throat—“you.”

“I couldn’t just leave her to do it on her own.”

“Which I appreciate. If I hadn’t been playing with Grace, I would’ve jumped on a plane and done it myself. The problem is what I know happens after you help her.”

“Nothing happened,” he groans.

That’s a dead giveaway. They totally fucked, and the guilt of losing Archer overtook him after the endorphin high died down.

“Uh-huh. You’re going to tell me you two didn’t sleep together and ended up in a big fight.”

“I…”

“You have to accept your feelings, confront your demons, and stop treating her like she doesn’t matter. We know she’s the love of your life.”

“We shouldn’t be together.”

“I don’t have the bandwidth for your explanation,” I argue.

“Okay, let’s forget about Teddy. I need to know if you’re okay.”

“Always.”

“You’re not.”

“I am, Seth. I misshim, but I’m living my life.”

“Why were you baking?”

“I wasn’t tired. It’s probably the lack of sex. The only way I used to fall asleep when I was so wired up was by fucking your best friend all night long. I have too much energy and no one to fuck.”

“I didn’t need to hear that.”

“Well, then stop trying to figure out what’s wrong with me because, obviously, no one knows how to handle the truth. Go apologize to Teddy.”

“I’ll be there this coming weekend.”

“Fine.”

“Love you, Pipe.”

“Love you too, Seth.”

After hanging up with him, I realize there’s a message from Dad’s assistant. “Sweetie, we finally leased the apartment. The new tenant will move in there in a few days. I know I said no one would want it, but we made it happen.”

I frown, staring at the phone. Why would anyone want the apartment? I priced it high to avoid this problem. I… should I call her and…

What can I say?

Sorry, but I changed my mind?

I’ll give whoever rented the place a couple of days. After that, I’ll help them look for a place to live and return their money. I might even cover the moving cost.
