I backtrack a few steps to hide in the corner, but the man who grabbed me pushes me forward.

“Found this one trying to run off,” he shouts, catching Benny’s attention.

Benny’s gaze flicks to me. The room turns quiet as he holds it there.

He stares, contemplating how to handle me, and revulsion smears along his features. No doubt because I’m in this hellhole.

“Raul,” Benny says, glowering while pointing at me, “take her to your car and don’t let her out of your sight.”

The man to his right nods and approaches me.

“Can I go with her?” Sienna perks up on the couch. “We came together. We’re best friends.”

Benny’s eyes don’t leave mine. “No.”

“But—”

“No,” Benny repeats, his voice almost roaring now.

I attempt to flee, but the man who stopped me before pushes me back. I flip him the bird at the same time Raul captures me from behind. I’m surprised at how strong Raul is as he hauls me out of the house to a black sedan.

Raul opens the passenger door. “Watch your head.” He shoves me inside.

“Go get my friend,” I demand. “We have nothing to do with those guys.”

“I take orders from Benny. Not you.” He rubs his mustache before slamming the door in my face.

I open the door, but he shoves it closed with one hand. Like he knows I’m not a quitter, he leans back against the door to stop me from trying again. I don’t know if he’s guarding me from leaving or from anyone getting me.

I rifle through my crossbody purse for my phone and slump in the seat when I realize it’s dead.

Whatever is happening in there, I want no part of it. But I do need to rescue Sienna. Her bad taste in men shouldn’t be her death sentence.

When I turn on the overhead car light, Raul opens the door.

“Oh, don’t mind me.” I lower the visor mirror and wave him away. “Just checking my makeup.”

He rolls his eyes and slams the door.

Now, he won’t find it odd when the light comes on during my escape. I climb over the center console into the driver’s seat and roll out of the car. Without bothering to close the door fully, I hold my breath and race toward the backyard.

The fence door is broken, so I walk right into Logan’s yard. There’s no outdoor lighting, so it’s pitch-black and quiet.

Almost too quiet.

No screams or gunshots.

That could be a good sign.

Between steps, I peek over my shoulder to watch for Raul. I shriek when I smack into someone. It’s so dark that I can’t make out the person. This isn’t the best neighborhood, and so far, my luck tonight has been shit. The person steadies me so I don’t fall.

The wind blows the smell of gun powder and a familiar cologne in my face.

“Jesus,” Benny hisses.

My shoulders tense at his voice.

“Do you ever fucking listen?”
