I gesture toward the house. “I can’t leave my friend in there with you crazies. She’s not a part of … whatever is going on.”

He blocks me from walking around him. “You’re not going inside, Neomi. Either turn your ass around or I will make you. And I promise, I won’t be gentle.”

“Oh my God.” I stumble back and smack a hand over my mouth. My heart goes wild. “Did you …” I remove my hand so my words are clear. “Did youkillthem?”

“No, I didn’t killthem.” Annoyance laces his words. “I shot a few kneecaps. No big deal.”

“They weren’t Sienna’s kneecaps, right?”

“Your friend is fine. I had my guy drive her home. That’s when we realized you were missing.”

“Will he also take me home, or is your plan for me to walk in this dangerous neighborhood alone and die?”

“I’ll take you home.”

“I’d rather Uber.”

“I’d rather not hear your mouth about it, but it looks like neither of us is getting what we want.”

“I was just in Raul’s car. He has plenty of room for me.”

“I have more.” He snaps his fingers. “Now, let’s go. I’m sure one of these boneheads will eventually remember how to use a phone and call 911 before they bleed out.”

My father chose such a great man for me to marry.

Benny places his hand on the small of my back and guides me toward the road. Raul’s sedan is gone. Benny opens a black SUV’s passenger door and gestures for me to get in. As much as I’d love to run off, I’d be dumb to play games in this area. I squeeze into the seat and don’t say a word when he joins me on the driver’s side.

I clip my seat belt and inhale the scent of rich leather and air freshener as Benny drives.

“Why were you there?” Benny asks after turning off Logan’s street.

An ambulance with sirens wailing and lights flashing speeds past us and turns where we just left.

I side-eye him. “Why wereyouthere?”

“They robbed one of the pharmacies we protect—Ashbury’s.”

I wince. “They robbed Ashbury’s?”

“Sure fucking did.”

“That’s rude.” I sigh. “I guess it deserves a kneecap shot.”

Mr. and Mrs. Ashbury are the sweetest souls. They’ve run the pharmacy for decades. They regularly hold donation events for those who can’t afford their prescriptions and always provide free suckers.

“And there you were, hanging out with them,” Benny adds, like a parent scolding his child.

“The first and only time.” I click my tongue against the roof of my mouth. “I was about to leave when you played a WWE character and kicked down the door.”

“Don’t go there again.”

“First off, don’t tell me what to do. Second, I wouldn’t step foot in there again even if someone held a gun to my head.”

I don’t care how bad Sienna pleads. She’ll have to deal with lover-boy Logan alone. Not that he’ll last—especially if he has a blown-out knee.

The ride is quiet as Benny drives through the city and nears the suburbs.

Some people are made for silence.
