I scream and sprint in his direction, racing the car.

“Benny!” I yell, my voice hoarse and throat sore.

I’m close to reaching him while keeping myself in line with the shooter, so they can’t hit Benny.

But it’s too late.

Something smacks into my body.

At first, it feels like a pebble thrown at me, and I stand there in shock.

Pain explodes throughout my body.

I crumple to the ground, and my insides burn like fire.

My ears ring harder than they did from my mother’s wails.

As I lie there on the ground, I faintly hear my name.

Yelling.

Gunshots.

I shut my eyes, no longer strong enough to keep them open.

My body is picked up, and I lie limply in strong arms.

A crack of thunder bursts from the sky as I hear Benny’s voice telling me to stay alive for him.

I open my mouth to tell him I can’t.

To say goodbye, but the words don’t come.

One simple whimper leaves me.

A whimper of devastation that this is the end.

I can’t stay alive long enough to tell my husband I’m in love with him.

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

BENNY

I don’t waitfor an ambulance.

In my experience, gunshot victims have a higher survival rate if you drive them rather than take an ambulance. Every minute is crucial. The ten minutes it could take for an ambulance to arrive could make a difference between life or death for Neomi. I won’t take that chance.

We’re in the back of the Escalade as my father speeds to the hospital.

That bullet was meant for me.

But my wife took it.

The decision will be the biggest mistake of the shooter’s life.

There will be hell to pay.

“Please wake up, baby,” I beg, searching for the wound.
