He kisses me like I’m all he’s ever wanted.

I’m not sure how much time passes as we stand there and kiss.

But reality shatters through us as the sound of gunshots breaks our moment.

CHAPTERTEN

BENNY

I was so wrappedup with my mouth on Neomi’s that it took me a moment to knock myself back into reality and realize I’d heard gunshots.

A rarity for me since I’m always on guard.

I should’ve known not to expect a calm wedding.

But weddings never concern me. They tend to be safe spaces. The receptions are usually where trouble arises. Most of us prefer not to create violence in places of worship.

Neomi gasps, the bottom of her dress ripping when I tackle her to the ground and use my body to shield hers. Gunshots fire around us.

“Take the back exit,” I tell her, and she wheezes under the heaviness of me. “Do not fucking stop for anyone.”

She nods. “Back exit. Got it.”

I roll off her, stand, and continue blocking her from harm while drawing my pistol from my blazer pocket. Even though the gunfire has ceased, I grip it tight.

Neomi shuffles toward the back hall, her dress creating a struggle, and her sisters are behind her.

My uncle Lorenzo slams the cathedral’s double doors shut. Our guests are ducking behind their pews or gripping guns in their hands to return fire.

The shots don’t last long.

Merely a few seconds before ceasing.

Then, there’s yelling.

A baby crying.

People rattling off questions while others argue over who will clean up the dead bodies.

There’s a dead body in the aisle. I’m not surprised one of our guests killed him. Every person in this room is affiliated with the Marchetti or Cavallaro name. If we hear gunshots, we return gunfire and ask questions later.

Tommaso appears defeated, his shoulders slumped, as a gun hangs from his hand. The veins in my neck pulse as I stalk down the aisle to the motherfucker who interrupted my wedding.

Interrupted my first kiss with my wife.

He’s lucky he’s already dead.

The man is facedown, and blood has puddled around his body. His arm is out, as if he fell and attempted to reach for his gun next to him. I smirk while taking in his bullet-ridden body with too many shots to count.

When I look past the dead moron, I spot another man slumped against one of the cathedral doors with a bullet between his eyes. The bastard didn’t even make it far enough to cause destruction.

Who sent their amateurs to fuck up my wedding?

“Has anyone seen my daughters?” I hear Concetta call out at the same time a scream comes from the back hallway, where Neomi and her sisters fled.

I sprint in that direction. My father and Severino are on my heels. We find Isabella at the end of the hall in front of the exit door.

Why is she blocking it and not running?
