Her eyes quickly flash to us before returning to her left. I step farther, leveling my finger on the gun trigger, and follow in the direction Isabella is looking. I can hear the blood rushing through my head when I see a man restraining Neomi from behind. He has one hand over her mouth, and the other holds a gun against her head.

Neomi’s eyes are wide with horror as she struggles to fight him off. When the man’s eyes land on me, panic grows in them, matching Neomi’s. Severino attempts to push past me, but I stop him.

“That is my goddamn daughter,” he grunts, fighting me.

“Who is now my wife,” I say, holding out my arm while keeping my eyes pinned on the motherfucker who threatened my wife and ruined my wedding. “I’ll handle this.”

“Lower your gun and release her before I blow your head off,” I sneer at the man. I’m gritting my teeth so hard that my jaw aches.

The man, who appears more experienced than his dead coworkers, grinds the muzzle of the gun harder into her skull. “And I’ll do the same with hers. You pull the trigger, I’ll pull mine.”

Neomi winces at his remark.

Concetta cries out her daughter’s name behind me.

“I have a clear shot,” my father says, his voice low.

“If someone hurts my wife, they die atmyhands,” I tell him. “No one else’s.”

My eyes meet Neomi’s, and a tear spills down her cheek. A rage I’ve never experienced courses through me, and for a moment, I refuse to look away. She needs to see in my face that she will not die here today. That I will protect and save her from this man. And anyone else who tries to hurt her.

As much as we push and pull, she’s mine.

She carries my name and will forever be protected.

My life will always be on the line before hers.

“You do know crazy men with guns surround you,” Isabella tells him with a snarl you wouldn’t expect from her, given how innocent she appears. “You won’t leave here alive, so let my sister go.”

“If I don’t bring this bitch where she needs to go and finish the job, I’ll die,” the man hisses, and sweat clings to his brow. “Either way, I’m a dead man.”

Just as I’m finding the perfect angle to shoot him, he screams when Neomi bites into the palm of his hand. When he pulls back his hand and shifts his body, I shoot him in the head. His body jerks back at the impact, and his brain matter spatters onto Neomi. He slumps against the wall behind him as he collapses to the floor.

“Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned,” I say sarcastically.

Severino opens his arms as Neomi rushes toward us. But she doesn’t go to him. Her body smacks into mine as she wraps her arms around my neck and shoves her face into my chest. She breathes me in like she’s been searching for breaths and I’m finally providing them to her.

I run my hand down her back, soothing her and pleading with her to know she’s safe. When she calms, I create enough distance to grab her face with both my hands.

“Are you okay?” I stress, running my hand along her cheek and not giving a shit about getting blood on me.

She nods, but her entire body trembles. “I just want to get out of here.”

“Um, does anyone know where the priest went?” Bria asks, and I notice she’s been stuck next to Isabella, just out of view.

“He ran out as soon as he heard gunshots,” Natalia says, and that’s when I remember we have people around us. “He’s probably praying for forgiveness for allowing us to use this church.”

Severino chuckles.

Nothing like a little bloodshed at your wedding.

Now, I need to figure out who created it.

NEOMI

“Areyoupositivewe have to cancel the reception dinner?” my mother asks. “We shouldn’t allow a few dead men to ruin such an important event.”
