He had seen that look on his mother’s face. “I don’t know what the big deal is. It’s just a place to live.”

“It’s more than that and you know it. It means the gym isn’t the only thing that you are putting first in your life. That is all Mom and Dad want to see.”

“I guess,” he said.

Megan came back and handed him the beer at the same time Grant Fierce made his way over. The two owners had been so busy mingling all night that they’d just said hi and moved on.

“Are you enjoying our party?” Grant asked.

“I am,” Jonah said. “You are throwing one great party.”

“It’s all my wife’s doing. And my sister-in-law. They started this years ago and each year they do a better and better job with it.”

“They really do,” Megan said. “I told Diane earlier she outdid herself this year with the decorations.”

The lights were dim and he was happy about that. But there were lots of tea lights all over the room along with gold and silver decor. The food and drink were flowing and out of this world.

There was no theme to the party. No set schedule or games or anything like that.

People were just moving around and talking or sitting in groups. It was casual and exactly the type of gathering he enjoyed.

“She loves to throw a party,” Grant said. “Not much more she likes.”

“Other than setting people up?” Cody asked.

“Well, you’re not complaining,” Grant said. “I don’t see Jonah doing much of that either.”

He looked at Grant and frowned. “You didn’t set us up,” he said.

“No, no,” Grant said. “You two met before. But know, we are good for giving pushes too, right, Megan?”

“Pushes?” he said, lifting an eyebrow.

Grant looked at him and then said, “Oh, looks like my brother is calling me over there. Have a good time.”

Grant took off fast and Jonah looked at Megan who was looking at his sister. “What am I missing here?”

“Nothing,” Raina said.

“I don’t believe it,” he said. “Megan?”

“It’s not the time,” she said. “But as Raina said, it’s nothing. I’ll explain later.”

“You’re damn right you’re going to,” he said and downed his beer.

Serious Discussion Today

The next morning, Megan got up before Jonah. She couldn’t sleep and she knew they were going to end up having a serious discussion today.

The last thing she wanted was him to find out that she needed some help to approach him. She would have done it on her own. She really would have. But not as fast as she had.

It wasn’t that big of a deal to her, but Jonah finished his beer fast and then got another before the clock struck midnight. He kissed her for everyone to see, but she saw behind his eyes he wasn’t happy.

When they were leaving he handed her his keys to drive and they didn’t say much on the trip home.

They got into his apartment and he got ready for bed so she did the same. He shut the light off and that was it. No talking. Nothing. Not even a kiss.
