She barely slept. The silence was worse in her eyes.

She wanted to shake him and say they should talk but then told herself maybe he needed time.

They hadn’t fought once and this was going to be their first. She had no idea how he’d be and she wanted to make sure she had a clear head for it.

He came out of the bathroom twenty minutes later and she was finishing her coffee.

“We need to talk.”

“We do,” he said. “I want you to tell me what Grant meant last night.”

“I will. I want to know why we didn’t talk about this last night though.”

“Because I wasn’t in the mood,” he said. “I’m still pissed, but I’ve calmed down. I didn’t want to say something I’d regret.”

“You’re doing a good job of it now,” she said, crossing her arms.

“What does that mean?” he asked.

“The fact you were so pissed off that you had to ‘calm down’ last night without even letting me tell you my side of it is insulting. It’s your way I see, not mine. So I had to stew all night soyoucan calm down?”

He looked as if he couldn’t believe she’d just said that to him.

“Tell me what Grant meant.”

“It’s nothing, just like your sister told you. You know they set people up. You saw your mother talking to them and even joked about it.”

“That’s right. I did. I said my feelings on it.”

“So if they did set us up you wouldn’t have anything to do with me? Is that what you’re saying?”

“No,” he said. “But I don’t need help.”

“Really? You needed my help to give you the nudge to take a step,” she threw back in his face.

He almost growled at her. “And did the Fierces have anything to do with you taking those steps?”

She let out a sigh. “Not like you think.”

“Exactly how I think,” he said. “Explain it.”

“Don’t raise your voice to me,” she said. “You’re getting worked up over nothing.”

“I don’t like to be lied to. I don’t like to be played.”

She took a step back. “No one is playing you. What are you talking about?”

“You knew how I felt. I’ve said it. You admitted it. Why not bring this up before? Because you knew I wouldn’t be happy.”

She ran her hands through her hair. “Jonah. Grant and Garrett saw us at the rehearsal dinner and wedding together. They talked to us both. They talked to your mother. They came and talked to me at work and were hinting. I don’t like being played either. I jokingly told Kara and Jade I wanted to throw them off and ask for their help.”

“You needed help from your bosses to seek me out? The same person who was teasing and flirting at the wedding with me?”

“A lot of good it did me when you didn’t even give me your number when you brought me home. All they did was suggest I don’t give up on you. That I try something else. They didn’t tell me what to do. They wouldn’t. I’m the one who came to the gym on my own that first night. That was it. After that it was all us.”

He didn’t look like he believed her. “They never said another word?”

“They would ask how things were going and that is it. Nothing else. They knew I was nervous about Raina, but you knew that. It’s not a secret. I don’t like secrets either.”
