Soft Look

“You shaved,” his brother said to him when he walked into Cody’s house the next morning with his tux in his hand. They were all getting dressed here and then taking a limo to the church and wedding. Since they would be passing by Cody’s house on the way to the reception, they decided to drop Trent and him off here to get their cars to have and not worry about figuring out a way back.

Most of their pictures would be at the park or the church anyway. They’d be right behind the limo getting to the reception for the ceremony. Easy enough in his eyes and was glad he’d thought of it.

Cody was laid back and didn’t care that much. His sister might not be thrilled, but it wasn’t going to mess with her timeline of anything. They were literally passing the road Cody lived on on the way to the ceremony and it made sense.

“Yeah,” he said. “So. Raina and Mom were pissed I had a beard yesterday.”

He’d gone home after the rehearsal dinner and done it then. He knew his face would be a little red and didn’t want that, so gave himself the night before for that to go away and this morning just touched it up.

“You did it on purpose,” Trent said. “You haven’t shaved in like three weeks out of the blue, then trimmed it before the dinner. They haven’t seen you, but I have.”

He grinned. It was hard to hide things when his brother lived so close by, but it’s not like they saw much of each other. Nothing more than getting dinner or a beer now and again when they weren’t working.

It seemed he worked all the time though.

“I have to bust on them when I can. Raina will be happy and that is all that matters.”

“She will be,” Trent said. “I wasn’t sure we’d ever get to this place.”

“That’s because I’m good for your sister,” Cody said, moving closer to them. “I hope you know that.”

“Dude,” Jonah said. “If you weren’t I would have punched you in the face by now whether Raina wanted me to or not.”

Cody laughed. “I know. But seriously, I want you two to know I love your sister. She means the world to me. I’ll do everything in my power to protect and keep her happy.”

“That’s all we can ask for,” Trent said. “Right, Jonah?”

“Yeah,” he said, shaking Cody’s hand.

Years ago he’d gone nuts when he’d found out his sister was in the ER when she was in college.

Raina had been the baby of the family and maybe he and Trent and their father sheltered her a lot. He’d taught her to defend herself, but he still wasn’t ready for her to move away for college after her two years locally.

To find out she’d been drugged one night and could have been raped had Tori not realized Raina was missing and gone to find her, had sent him in a rage. He’d been recovering from the head injury at that time, but he didn’t care. Nothing was going to stop him from finding out who’d done that to his sister and making them pay.

In the end nothing happened to the guys. They couldn’t be narrowed down and it was a lot of he said she said. Because nothing happened to his sister other than her drink being spiked, it was hard to prove a lot.

The fraternity was shut down though so he supposed that was something.

But his sister had spent years being skittish and he knew. They tried to help her as best as they could. He had to admit Cody was the one that brought her back to the person they remembered.

So much so she was finishing up her degree in engineering nights and already had a job ready for her at Fierce when the time came.

“Time to get dressed,” Trent said. “The limo will be here soon and if we are late Mom is going to come down on our heads.”

“Where is Dad?” he asked.

“He’s meeting us at the church,” Cody said. “He wanted to stay and see Raina before she got in the limo and then it would be faster to just meet us there.”

He knew his father was struggling with Raina getting married, but everyone just loved Cody so they’d have to accept Raina was a grown woman and not his baby sister anymore.

Everyone got their tuxes on. Ryder giving Cody a hard time about tying the knot, but he knew it was in jest because Cody had given Ryder a hard time when it came to Marissa too. Must be a universal thing.

An hour later they were pulling up to the church and going inside. There wasn’t much for them to do really at this point other than stand around and talk to people.
